Panasonic VCR won't play back its own tapes

Hi group .

This VCR is a Panasonic nv-sd200.

This is just weird. If I feed this VCR a pre-recorded tape it works.
If I feed it a tape recorded on another machine it works.
If I record a brand new tape it plays back fine on itself and another
machine.

However, if I try and record over an existing recording , the top of
the picture is distorted and the verticals are unstable.

Realigned the loose tape guide (using LP tape- works fine) , still no
go.

It almost looks like incomplete erasure of the very top of the tape,
but the erase head seems to be OK.

Anyone?

Maybe the full erase head isn't working or is misaligned. Is there
also a rainbow effect? (Does that happen with PAL tapes when the
previous recording isn't erased?)

OT, but there was a model of Hinari VCR (PAL) that suffered from failure
of the full erase head - and by a quirk of the head design, the previous
recording could often be seen under a new one at either end of the
tracking range. Confused me when I first saw it, not that's it's
diffucult to do that these days :)

Its possible . It plays back LP recordings fine FWIW.

BTW, there is a rainbow effect for about 2 seconds during frame
changes , then it goes away . Also the distortion fades in and out on
about a 4 second cycle (which could mean the drum is "tape tension
sensitive" ) .
When i tried dropping the tape tension it lost half the picture, which
is a VERY bad sign .

new drum on order (should have ordered an erase head, just to make
sure) .

38V on the full erase head - so that's OK . :) measures 1.6 ohms on my meter .
