Hi,

I have a six year old 4:3 TX29AD2 which has been supurb.

This weekend a fault has appeared: After the set has been on for a while the
picture gets gradually darker and darker. (The picture is fine, just dark)
If I max out the contrast and brightness it is watchable. This happens on
all channels including RGB input.

Is this likely to be something reasonably inexpensive to get fixed or is it
new TV time?

Cheers

Steve..

The fault may be in the high voltage multiplier, or in the power supply, or
in the main circuits for the CRT bias. You would have to verify all these
aspects to determine exactly where the fault is. There are a lot of
variables here. If you take the set to a service centre, they can give you
an estimate, rather than deciding to scrap the set. Sometimes these faults
can be fixed for a reasonable cost.

Thanks for the info.

The picture is now dark as soon as the set is switched on and doesn't
degrade further over time.

I have maxed the brightness, upped the contrast, turned picture AI on and
stored the settings. Its not perfect but very watchable setup like this.
Could it damage the set if I stick with this for a while?

I know how to get into the service menu, do you think I will be able to
improve things further by changing any settings there?

Cheers

No no, don't go messing with the service menu, everyone thinks they can
simply adjust out a problem but they adjust stuff and then the set is scrap
because it's impossible to get it all back the way it was once the problem
is fixed. Sounds like you have a bad capacitor, would have been much easier
to track it down with some freeze spray before it got this bad, but now
you'll have to look and see if you can find any that are bulging or leaking,
or take it to a shop that has an ESR meter.
