Panasonic SA-HT80 plays some DVDs, no others

It stopped playing certain DVDs, it says 'no disc'. It plays Con Air
(single side, single layer), but not The Thing (single side, dual layer)
and I have no idea why. One DVD wouldn't play until I ejected and inserted
it several times, but that didn't work for any of the others it wouldn't
recognize. Could it be a dirty laser (if I could be so lucky)? Or what is
most likely? Thanks.

I checked to be sure and it recognizes all of my single layer DVDs, but
none of my dual layer DVDs.

Very likely the laser pickup, but you should certainly try cleaning first.

Are those $14 kits, that have a cd-rom with brushes, any good?

Afraid not. A proper cleaning, using window cleaner or everclear-quality
alcohol is best.
Have 2 soft swabs ready. Have one moistened but not dripping wet, GENTLY
clean the lens with a rolling motion. Follow with the dry swab to remove any
residue.

Thanks Mark. I'll give it a try.
