Panasonic SA-HT70 (SC?) won't spin up

Friend of mine gave me this great player saying it wouldn't play discs.

I took it apart, and sure enough, the discs don't spin, but it will change
from disc 1 to 2, 3, 4, or 5 just fine.

I applied a little voltage to the disc motor, and it runs. So I put it all
back together & hoped. Worked fine for about 2 DVD's, then stopped spinning
disc's again. Will still change discs, and the laser head moves, but the
discs themselves don't spin.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks so much!

You probably have an intermittant spin motor

They usually are the first thing to go

We used to buy them aftermarket usually from MCM electronics when I worked
in a sterio shop

Thanks for the info. Seems like it could be. Any idea on the specs for
this motor? I'd hate to get the wrong kind.

Tymanthius:
If you applied power to the "spindle motor" without disconnecting it
electrically from the motor drive circuit you have now probably blown some
additional parts and components. Even if the motor is good, it usually
will not spin if there is a problem with the laser focus and other areas of
the unit.

Spend some time there learning about how a CD player works before you make
assumptions that could be incorrect.
Lots of good information there.

Thanks for the website, I'll start sifting thru in after this post.

As for frying other circuits/componets - I think I got lucky, as everything
works except the disc spin, which is what I had problems with to start. I
know, that can be a fairly large assumption, but I'm gonna stick w/ it until
I can be somewhat sure. No use looking for extra problems.

If not, well, I have a better sound system now, and it taught me something
w/o costing a penny. ;)

Try spinning the disk with your finger , and close the lid quick to see if
it still spins on its own power . They usually get a bad spot in the
armature . The other op is right , if you did not isolate the motor from its
driver circuits before applying power , you may well have fried the motor
drivers . Sometimes they label the spin motor with a part label . Mainly you
have to get a motor with the right shaft length ( provided you didnt fry the
drivers , in which case I would scrap it )

Tried the finger thing (cheated - popped of the case and spun it as it was
grabbed), but that didn't work at first.

So I took it apart again, no voltage. Figured out a little more on how it
works. Put it back together & spins, but not consistently. If I help it w/
my finger, it spins more, but then stops. I can hear the motor trying w/
the case off, but it just can't do the job. Dead motor. :(

Does this sound like a dead motor driver too? Doesn't seem so to me, but I
work on PC's (board swap lvl) and Canon microfiche & scanners (everything),
not DVD players.

If this sounds like just a motor to y'all too, I'd like to go ahead &
purchase the service manual so I can get the full directions on how to get
the drive out (it's a pain) and the part #.
