Panasonic PV4611 VCR Problem

My friend has a Panasonic PV-4611 VCR which is shutting down
automatically after 5 seconds of playback OR while recording. He said
that a few people came over to his place and plugged in their
Playstation 2 into the front jacks (about 3 weeks ago) and just
tonight, he programmed the vcr to record a show. He said after about
5 seconds of recording, the machine stopped recording. He then
proceeded to manually record and this time after 5 sec the vcr stopped
recording and powered down. He then powered on the machine to try
playback and the same sequence of events occurred...stop after 5 sec.
of playback, play again...stop after 5 of playback and shutdown.

He also noted that an error message "net1" or something similar
appeared on the screen once, but he hasn't seen the message again. He
thinks that the playstation did something to the vcr, but out of all
the times I've seen playstation plugged into VCRs, etc. I've never
heard of such problems.

He said there were no unusual noises and he tried different tapes.

I don't know anything about VCR repair but I'm willing to learn, I
tried to do some research before posting but didn't find anything
specific on this problem. I stumbled on a message from this group and
thought I'd post, any help would be much appreciated.

Thx, John

No, plugging the Playstation or anything else is not going to cause the
operational failure of the VCR that you reported.
First, unplug the machine and remove the top cover.... look for any foreign
objects in the mechanism where the tape goes..... pencils, pens, paper
labels, gum, etc, etc. If all of that is OK then, more than likely there
is a fault with the belts, idler, clutch, mode switch, loading mechanism
timing, motion sensor, etc, etc.
At the very least you should TAKE it to a service shop for a repair cost
estimate so you can make an intelligent repair decision with facts instead
of internet or telephone guesses.
