Panasonic NV-HD100B VCR

My Panasonic NV-HD100B VCR powers up for a second and then shuts down.
What happened is I asked it to rewind a tape after recording something and
it started to rewind and then stopped, I could hear a motor straining for a
short time and then it shut down. Now it wont power up for long enough to
even eject the tape. I have quite a bit of experience with electronics, and
a little experience with VCR's (very little) but these things aren't worth
anything anymore so if I can't fix it I'll have to bin it. It would be a
shame as the heads were in good shape before this happened. I thought maybe
mode switch but I'm hoping it's something simpler and cheaper. Any help
appreciated. Thanks

You can check the capstan motor to see if the brake pad has jammed, also
check the loading motor and yes, the mode switch is still a possibility.
However, unless there's anything obviously wrong in the mechanics, then
check all of the electrolytics in the PSU first - they're a well-known
problem area in Panasonic videos of this vintage.
