Hello,

I have several 16V8 (20 pin PLCC) and was wondering if there is any tool
that would allow me to develop and create JEDEC files for programming these
devices?

I was hoping Altera's MAX+PLUS II could help me, but apparently it doesn't
support these PAL devices.

I am thankful in advance.

Hi,Cypress Warp softwaresupports them, (not free but it is VHDL).

I think they have a Verilog version now, too, although I'm not sure how
good it is. Solaris or Windows, $99 for the basic version.

If you're using Unix, take a look at Steve Williams' Icarus Verilog,
which includes synthesis for a number of PAL devices.

or search through the old posts on Usenet; this topic comes up every now
and then, and there are more options I'm not remembering right now.

Hiya!

WinCUPL is free on Atmel's site. Does all the GALs, and some of the
ATV/ATF CPLDs as well. Nice and easy to work with, and the simulator,
although a bit clumsy, is good once you get to grips with it.

Yours, Mark.

mario,

PALCE was from AMD and supported by their PALASM development software. FAIK
this devices are still supported by Lattice isplever software. PALASM is
considered obsolete but has been lying around on the net for quite some
time. Try a Google for it. Beware: PALCE Jedec files may differ from Lattice
16V8 Jedec files. Their has been a PALTOGAL program to convert them. May be
worth a Google as well. Last option is a Lattice isplever package. You can
download it and get a six month license for it. Free... that's to say if you
have broadband. It's tens or even hundreds MB, so over a switched line it
becomes - let's say - expensive.

Thanks for the heads-up, Petrus! In fact, I have some AMD and some non-AMD
16V8. So, you're telling me that the AMD are PALCE and that they require a
different jedec file from the PAL 16V8.

Do you think isplever supports both?

Thanks Mark, I just finished downloading WinCUPL right now. I think I even
have an older version lying around somewhere.

cheers

As far as my memory goes a predecessor of the current isplever did. That's
to say PALCE (from AMD) and Lattice. They even may be compatible although
the programming algoritm was not. I didn't need to change Jedec files but I
sure needed to change brand setup of the programmer at the time. Still don't
know whether is was the intelligence of the programmer or the compatibility
of the Jedecs. However, I don't know your programmer and there are other
brands around so you'll have to check it out before using. My current
license has been expired, so I can't do it now.

Atmel have a free version of WinCupl - only supports Atmel devices but ISTR 16V8 is one of them
