OT: "Ugly" switcher

Hello All,

Thought I'd share this one: I had to adjust the monitor on my logic
analyzer a wee bit which meant opening the enclosure. I never noticed it
before but there was the 5V switcher and it said on the label "Another
ugly ES100-5". This is not something scribbled on, it's the original
label from Elpac. I almost spilled my coffee.

It's actually a nice looking power brick.

Regards, Joerg

Sadly it doesn't seem to feature on their website. ;-(

There's a village a little north of London called Ugley. There is also
an association of ladies who knit jam and bake jumpers called the Womens
Institute. So there's a branch called the Ugley Women's Institute.

There is also a village in Kent (just south of Maidstone) called
'Loose'. It, too, has a flourishing WI cell.

These bodies are named 'The WI of...', which is predictable but dull.

The good news is that nothing is compulsory.
The bad news is that everything is prohibited.

There's also a village called Bitchy somewhere in the Westcountry. I
wonder of they have a branch there, too?

Hi Graham,

Sadly it doesn't seem to feature on their website.
Maybe someone pulled the plug on that kind of humor. This analyzer is
about 20 years old (remember Dolch?) but still going strong. It reminded
me of IC masks from the good old days where folks drew smileys and
initials into voids.

Anyway, a switcher that runs two decades without a single burp must be a
pretty good design.

That reminds me of a UK pro-audio company that made its own VCAs when
such
technology was quite esoteric, discrete and rather tricky. It was made
as a
thick film hybrid.

Reputedly the pattern included the phrase 'f**k off' in case anyone
tried to
x-ray ti so see what was inside.

I wonder what MTBF is like on modern units ?
