Imagine crossing the Pacific like this:

The 718-foot Zen Hua is waiting for calmer seas to be able to get
under the Golden Gate Bridge to Oakland with two huge cranes on board.

The same ship ran into problems with a hurricane delivering two cranes
to Norfolk back in 1999.

Hello Spehro,

This can also happen on a small scale. Once we had a 40ft container
being trucked to our place, right through the tiny streets of a quaint
little town in Europe that is more than 1200 years old. The truck was
stopped right away by an astonished police officer. "You've got to be
kidding!". Finally with police escort and all the truck inched its way
through town. You could see the awe in people's faces when they pulled
away the curtains and saw that big wall of steel with Korean letters
move by really close to their windows.

Hmmm- like those hurricanes just pop into port on 5-minute notice that
no one can anticipate. And the CG needs to be told all about their port
control responsibilities by an Anteon type who was due to write some
blah-blah-bl-ugh- what in the world would we do without all these
"generalist" mouthpieces thinking and talking away furiously and
incessantly.

There's a helluva lot (20,000 tons according to the below link) of
ballast water in the hull. The cranes are "only" 1,000 tons each.

I saw a documentary on Discovery channel only a few weeks back which

mentioned that these cranes were being made and there were great concerns
over their size and the room under the bridge. Nice to see a result! :)

We drove under the Bay bridge about 10 minutes before the crane went
under, and traffic looked normal to me. Mo said that they were going
to slow traffic somehow, probably to reduce the carnage when
rubberneckers rear-end other cars.

It was a gorgeous day: warm, sunny, t-shirt weather after weeks of
winter storms. We took Mark and the kid for dim sum and then the
classic hike from Levi Plaza up the stairs (like, 600 of them or
something) on the side of Telegraph Hill, through the Grace Marchant
Gardens, around Coit Tower, down into North Beach for cappuchino and
sacripantina. Halfway up, there's a stunning deco apartment building
that was LB's apartment in "Dark Passage."

Anytime anybody's visiting, I'll show you the path.

Where are they going to get cranes big enough to unload these?

Actually, I'm surprised they didn't ship them over with 'some assembly
required'.
