Scam emails using peoples personal details from PayPal

Here is a new type of phishing scam that relies on your name and email address details that your Paypal account uses. So
paypal has been compromised. It may pay to change your Paypal password.

http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=942434
There are 5 other sites informing of this scam.

People are wondering if Paypal may have been compromised, due to suspicious emails they've recieved with what seems to
be Paypal-specific info inside. So, beware bogus Adobe and Skype emails, and hopefully there'll be more info about the
possible Paypal issue, or some other explanation, soon.

Cheers Don...

Anyone who you do business with using your PayPal account has your full
name and address provided by PayPal - so they can send the goods to you,
of course. What they do with that data after then is up to them.

PayPal itself does not need to be 'hacked' to get that data, and I dont
see how changing your password is going to help.

Who's to say the details even came from PayPal?

Anyone buying from Ebay gets the sellers name and address regardless of
how they pay.
An individual seller isn't going to be able to generate a massive data base to have all these bodgy websites and sales
machines put in place. Think about it.

Have a look at the websites and domains involved.
First example I got to:
http://skype-instant-upgrades.com/

And yes it could well be an ebay security leak, and not paypal.

check some of these out:
adobe-pdf-upgrades.com
skype-instant-download.com
skype-instant-update.com

an individual seller?

OK good point.

This sort of goes along the lines of the infected PC phone scam where
the culprits have similar access to personal details.

With so many data bases, and so much data floating around these days,
it's no wonder it's readily available to the crims.

Look at the Wikileaks saga, one bloke just creams off the USA military
database. If he hadn't spilled the beans no one would have been any
the wiser as to who did it.

Same thing in India, Phillipines, etc, who's to say how good the data
security measures are, and how well they audit access.
In fact with wikileaks, the US deliberately made that stuff available to a
huge range of military personel post 9/11 in a completely stupid attempt
to try to stop another 9/11 etc happening again.

That was absolutely guaranteed to see some stupid kid spill the beans sometime.

When you get these phishing emails forward them to spoof@paypal.com and they
will endeavour to have them closed down.

Just got my first one to my paypal email address, which was changed on 1st-Jan, this year.
so I sent it onto spoof@paypal.com

we will see if they do anything about it, as it is without doubt a security breach at PP.
