OT Open Letter To All Manufacturer's

Pass this along please.

You manufacturer's ask for a serial number or a model number to get
support? And why is this model number so different than the
advertised model?

Well, why do you print the serial number on a tiny label using the
smallest type font you can find.

This is elder abuse!
I have to get a flashlight and a magnifying glass to read the 20+ digit
serial numbers.

How much stupidity can you aggregate?

OT but this applies to all PC related HW and etc.

This is the cost you (and everybody else) must pay for the cheapness
of high-performance business hardware nowadays sold for toys or
entertainment. In my first CP/M PC its floppy drives cost $350 each
and disks were several dollars apiece.

Well, why do you print the serial number on a tiny label using the
smallest type font you can find.

This is the cost everyone must pay for miniaturization and the
cost-benefit aspect that most people who really need to read
serial numbers also know exactly what devices can do -- which
is more than you or I know.

I have to do the same thing when I am entering the key off an
M$ OEM label. Magnifying glass and strong white flashlight.
I think they use 4 pitch. I think they think they are funny.

Sub-model. A Lenovo T430 for example has many different SKUs depending
on how it was configured at the factory (what CPU, HD size, installed
RAM, video sub-system, etc...)

Well, why do you print the serial number on a tiny label using the smallest
type font you can find.

Cause most people want their machine looking as clean as possible. I
do like that same machines are now making the sticker bigger but hiding
it under the battery.

I use my phone camera to take a picture and then I can read it easier.

I always though it was because folks tend to rub off
the print and under the battery protected the print.

That's also a good possible reason for it.

Guys! The apostrophes were all in the right places.
They were just too small for you to see! :)

You only have to read the serial number once.

And you should do that the minute you get the item home, record the serial
number in case it needs servicing or in case it gets stolen. I realize a
lot of items don't engrave the serial number into the unit, but recording
it is better than nothing. Then save it with all similar information on
your computer.

The reality is, I used to keep this stuff on paper, and I'd always have to
look for it through piles and folders to find it. Once I started keeping
it on the hard drive, I knew exactly where it was. So I can rapidly check
when I got something and how much I paid for it. I scan the bills, I scan
the manuals (unless I discover I can download it), in some cases I might
save reviews about the unit. Keep any hints there too. A directory for
each device, a directory for all the subdirectories. So I don't have to
dig to find anything when it's needed.

I think he does have a point. And they always put it some damn place
that you can't get to safely with the thing still switched on.

Same with these high entropy security registration codes that include
copious combinations of 0OQ1lI2Z5S6G8B in groups of four or five with
spaces or dashes but refuse to let you type it in like that!

And they use some exotic handwriting font in 4pt for good measure.

It is really annoying when they send the registration code by email but
you can't actually copy and paste it into the required field!!!
OT but this applies to all PC related HW and etc.

It goes far wider than that. Almost no credit card input forms will
allow you to input the data with the spaces to make it easily checkable.

Wrong, there should not have been an apostrophe in "Manufacturer's", as was
in "You manufacturer's ask for a serial number or a model number ", OR, in
the Header "OT Open Letter To All Manufacturer's" if anyone really cares
Old Guy, you will NEVER get forgiven for that screw-up, which makes mockery
of the whole English language.
Damn!!!!!!
Now STOP it !!!!

Used to be, but Lenovo model numbers now cover a broad range of
options on the same platform.

I don't. I always seem to need the model number when I'm online. The
sticker on the bottom isn't objectionable, IMO.

He didn't set the stage well with all the cross-posting, newsgroups not
relevant but leaving out more relevant newsgroups.

And this is just an ego boost for him, he just wants to gripe, instead of
complaining directly to the companies, or even at least sending a letter
to the local newspaper, which might look a lot more valuable.

I'm an "old guy, 68) too and yes I also hate the small print. And people don't seem to speak as loudly or clearly any more for that matter. Excuse me while I wipe up the drool. I also can't remember shit. But instead of complaining about something as trivial as a serial number, get a pair of reading glasses.

I have a idea. How about commenting on the state of "customer service" these days, (or more fittingly) lack of it. When was the last time you waited on hold for 30 minutes to speak with someone at a company whose recorded announcement kept reminding you that your call was important to them. Lenny
