OT: Old news: Bill and Melinda Gates divorced...

I just heard about that.

A few months ago, I read how Bill started their relationship... He met
Melinda in the parking lot and grabbed her by the pussy. He asked about
scheduling a date with her. She retorted \"That\'s not spontaneous enough\".
So, dropping to his knees, he started begging her to go out that very
evening. (a dramatization)

A very old Bill Gates quote about marriage...

\"I want to marry a woman who\'s smart enough to know she won\'t get any of
my money.\" (or similar)

That was then. Considering his capitulation in the startup of their
relationship, I wonder if he had the balls to use a prenuptial agreement.
One can only speculate about the outcome, since (apparently) the divorce
court stuff (settlement) is hidden. Probably doesn\'t care, since he
promotes the estate tax and he is still a billionaire.

Nowhere near terminal enough.

Don\'t like it, ignore it. It\'s that simple.

I have been a hard-core personal computing enthusiast ever since Windows
3.1. I know Microsoft\'s Windows inside and out.

Closely followed the pre-2000 big Microsoft antitrust trial.

As anybody old enough and has anything to do with PCs knows, Bill Gates
was a huge contributor/factor.

Generally speaking... Being divorced by Melinda is (likely) the last
chapter in Bill Gates\' life.

Bill Gates was a relatively HUGE software engineer.

He wasn\'t. He was in the right place at the right time with a more or less adequate operating system when IBM needed one for their personal computer.
IBM\'s software quality control team went through it in detail, and made it whole lot more reliable than it was when Bill Gates had offered it to them. They were fairly rude about the original code. It was essentially a clone of Gary Kildall\'s CP/M. Kildall didn\'t want to talk to IBM. so IBM went to Bill Gates instead.

Everything since then has been the ruthless, and rather uninspired exploitation of a largely captive market.

> Such a major development in his personal life is news to any high tech oriented person.

It\'s gossip column fodder. Bill Gates is famous because he\'s rich. He got rich from software, but he didn\'t get rich because it was good software. He got rich because it was more or less adequate software in the right place at the right time.

>This chronic-lying cannibal leftist Australian troll is the most persistent troll in this group...

John Doe does lie a lot, though he may be too stupid to realise that he is lying. And he\'s blind to the fact that he\'s our number one troll. Nobody else can hold a candle to his nasty habits.

Huge entrepreneur; software engineer not so much.

Huge businessman for sure, and he employed jillians of engineers.

Microsoft\'s (short for \"microcomputer software\") Windows has been the only
mainstream personal computer operating system since its beginning. Not
even IBM\'s OS/2 could touch it. While constantly shopping for and playing
with PC stuff, I saw OS/2 in stores but was never persuaded to buy a copy.

Windows had a rocky first ten years (the blue screen of death (BSOD) was
infamous), but, perhaps encouraged by the Microsoft antitrust trial,
Microsoft produced Windows 2000 and Windows XP that made Windows easy to
use for end-users without professional support. No more BSODs or being
locked out of Windows.

I can hear a pin drop in my computer, but nothing in the last few days has
even hinted at anything being wrong. One thing there is a lot of nowadays
is processes starting and stopping. You might not have this in Linux, but
in Windows... We can hear all types of system sounds. Mine has always been
set up to beep whenever a process starts or stops. Over the years, system
activity has gradually increased. Long ago, even seeing the hard drive
light blink without having asked the stupid computer to do something was
annoying. Now it\'s always doing something.

Windows functionality could be better, but it is adequate. Post 2000, my
only complaint is not having built in speech and automation. I asked the
antitrust trial District Court \"friend of the court\" about speech
recognition and TTS being essential forms of input/output. He resisted.
But in fact, as Google is proving with Android, speech is a big part of
computing. Obviously someday it will be on every sort of platform. Every
sci-fi movie with computers in it has them talking. Linux has nothing like

Huge entrepreneur; software engineer not so much.

Huge businessman for sure, and he employed jillians of engineers.

Mainly to make money and lock out the competition.

Netscape worked fine, until Microsoft started tinkering with it\'s Explorer so that stuff that worked for Netscape didn\'t work for Explorer. It prompted the United States Microsoft antitrust case in 1998, which didn\'t work - Explorer remained the dominant browser until about 2004 - peaking at 96% market share in 2001. When Firefox showed in 2004 it took over, peaking in 2010

While constantly shopping for and playing with PC stuff, I saw OS/2 in stores but was never persuaded to buy a copy.

Everybody else was using it. Linux was better, but harder to use.

> Windows had a rocky first ten years (the blue screen of death (BSOD) was infamous), but, perhaps encouraged by the Microsoft antitrust trial, Microsoft produced Windows 2000 and Windows XP that made Windows easy to use for end-users without professional support. No more BSODs or being locked out of Windows.

They weren\'t so much easier to use, as less bug-ridden. Microsoft used its customer base as it quality control department.

John Doe isn\'t quite the expert he imagines himself to be.

Linux lets you do whatever you want to do.

John Doe hasn\'t got a clue.

It\'s obviously not essential. Speech recognition has been around for ages but it isn\'t all that reliable. Human speech is set up to be fairly redundant, and listeners are expected to do a lot of error detection and correction.. Computer haven\'t got the processing power to do that anything like as well as humans. It can generate rough drafts, but that\'s about it.

He knew what he was talking about. John doe doesn\'t.

Speech hasn\'t got anything to do with computing. It\'s one more human-computer interface.

And will work almost as well as a typist transcribing dictation.

That why it is called science *fiction*.

Of course it could. Natural-sounding speech synthesis is remarkably tricky, and you pretty much have to know what the speech you are synthesising actually means if you wan to get the prosody right. Getting hold of the necessary database could be tricky. Co-oarticulation means that you need a data base of diphones for you language, and in practice for your dialect.

English has 42 phoneme so you need the 1764 pairs of phonemes before you can make one sound right when it follows another.

They have been published, but only fairly recently, and they are large.

That\'s old but I remember playing around with text to speech on an XP
box. It was only an API but fairly easy to use. We got a few laughs out
of it but the last thing an emergency dispatcher needs is a talking
computer. Speech to text might have some use although they are talking
to the person on the other end of the 911 call during an active incident.

Fast forward 10 years:

Never used it. My brushes with Ease of Access generally come when I fall
asleep on the shift key and get the popup.

That may make the folks at Dragon unhappy. Like Google it goes off to a
server to do the dirty work which may make some people uneasy.

I sometimes listen to the NOAA weather on the radio. The speech
synthesis has improved quite a bit but there are odd slips like
pronouncing \'wind\' like \'wind up a spool of wire\'. That\'s surprising
given the limited vocabulary of a weather forecast. Place names are also
problematic but even native English speakers can mangle them. In New
England \'Worcester\' can act as a shibboleth to screen out visiting Texans.

It\'s more specific than that, though John Doe isn\'t in any position to be aware of this, as he knows very little, and what he thinks he knows is mostly wrong.

I do get upset when people post incorrect information here, particularly when it is worded in a way that might make an unsophisticated reader take them seriously.

It\'s a fairly significant difference from what John Doe is claiming, but since John Doe makes a habit of posting demented assertions on the basis that they are inarguably correct, one can see where he is coming from. It would be nice if he went back there and shut up, but he\'s much too silly for that to happen.

https://news.microsoft.com/2022/03/04/microsoft-completes-acquisition-of-nuance-ushering-in-new-era-of-outcomes-based-ai/

\"Microsoft completes acquisition of Nuance\"

IBM tried speech recognition with its \"Via Voice\". Microsoft tried speech
recognition with \"Windows Speech Recognition\" (WSR for short, and it was).

Microsoft has acquired the maker of Dragon NaturallySpeaking (I use to
dictate with and to activate scripts in Windows).

That will be great if Microsoft doesn\'t kill Nuance\'s talent and (assuming
it wants to) it successfully integrates Dragon into Windows.

But that\'s still a long way from voice-activated scripting. Hopefully the
guys/buddies who make the automation utilities compatible with Dragon will
find Microsoft\'s (assumed) implementation of Dragon in Windows easier to
hack. The Vocola 3 scripting stuff works with WSR (that almost nobody uses).
So there is potential, if Microsoft replaces its SR with the Dragon stuff.
