The thought is that the Russians are facing defeat, and are prepared to make all kinds of fatuous claims the unrealistic hope of frightening people out of supporting the Ukraine. Putin might be crazy enough to threaten Armageddon, but his colleagues probably aren\'t crazy enough to let him follow through.

Cursitor Doom might not have a enough sense to realise this.

The only reason for Putin to flee is if he was ousted. The most likely
reason he\'d be ousted is for being perceived as too weak - which he
is. It\'s his most likely replacement we need to be concerned about.
I\'d put money on that person being a bellicose ultra-nationalist and
it will be *our* meddling in a sphere of the world in which we have no
legitimate interest that\'ll bring it about.

You obviously have not paid attention to Putin\'s lies that are refuted by
many sites.

Putin claims that western assistance to Ukraine would be \"a global
catastrophe.\" His invasion of Ukraine has already caused a global
catastrophe and has resulted in sanctions that will destroy Russia.

Putin has not specified what he means by \"global catastrophe.\" He is losing
in Ukraine, and will make all kinds of wild statements to try to intimidate
western countries.

Putin has threatened nuclear retaliation many times. No one takes him
seriously, although they continue to monitor the situation. He has done
nothing to prepare his arsenal, his route to the missiles is under the
control of Norway, and Putin is perfectly aware he would die if he used
nuclear weapons. His generals also know what would happen and would shoot
him if he tried.

You obviously are ignorant of the actual situation and prefer to make
frightening claims to get attention. Since your intentions are clear and
dishonorable, I now PLONK you and will never see your posts again.

Hmm.

Do you or do you not think that whoever controls the Russian missile
force can inflict catastrophic damage on the US?

Do you or do you not think that there is a range of opinions within
official Russia as to how bad things have to get before they would
consider unleashing that force?

What is your estimate of that range? Losing Crimea, which has been
Russian since the reign of Catherine the Great, and was transferred to
the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic by Khrushchev? Overrunning
Moscow? A credible threat to deploy NATO ground forces in Ukraine? You
don\'t know? Neither do I.

How sure does one need to be about that, to make it a rational policy
option to pour a major fraction of NATO\'s materiel inventory into a
nasty border dispute between bits of the former Soviet Union?
(Even ignoring what the West has been doing in Ukraine since they
overthrew the elected government in 2014. It wasn\'t that great an
election, granted, but it was a lot better than armed force.)

And how sure can one be that what the media tell us are a sufficient
basis for making that determination? It\'s a pretty big bet on a very
small matter, globally speaking.

Just saying.

My only concern is that Putin may be deposed for losing in Ukraine and
be replaced by a militant ultra-nationalist (of which there are many
waiting in the wings) who is far, far worse. That is the chance we are
taking by our actions and I personally don\'t fancy taking such a huge
risk over essentially some insignificant border dispute which is being
blown out of all proportion.

Until it happens to be a border you live right next to. If all your potential allies have already been eaten up when that happens, you might develop seconds thoughts., but rather too late to be useful.

That \"insignificant border dispute\" has already killed a lot of Ukranians, including civiians living quietly in their apartments. Their lives won\'t be significant to you, and yours won\'t be significant to them when you fall foul of some rabid psychopath.

Putin has been saying this kind of thing all along. For the moment he
seems to be sane enough to realise that the resulting deaths would
include himself and those cares about (though the latter may number zero).

Lies, certainly, but inscrutable?
Nah; Molotov\'s claim that the Russo-Finnish war was a matter of food
delivery is a classic, as is the so-called military assistance the USSR
rendered to Poland while Hitler invaded (Beria ordered thousands
of Poland\'s government and military and intelligentsia to be first taken
prisoner, then, in secret, slaughtered).

Mainly, when a translation from Russian is inscrutable, it\'s because there\'s
a background of slanted rhetoric, perhaps using untranslatable puns, or
keywords that refer to some obscure prepared fiction that \"everyone knows\".

Relax. Putin has no intention of starting WWIII. In order to launch
a tactical nuke, the warheads would have to be retrieved from a
storage bunker and mounted on the missile. See

What We Know About How a Russian Nuclear Strike Could Play Out | WSJ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5yCz_UN5CE

Western intelligence sources would quickly detect this and issue a
warning.

Despite Putin\'s issuing nuclear threats, no movement of warheads has
ever occurred.

In addition, western powers have made it clear what would happen if
Putin issued a nuclear strike. Putin is not stupid. He knows he
would not survive. His generals know this also and would never allow
Putin to start a nuclear war.

I have been following the Russian invasion of Ukraine since it
started. On 1 Mar 2022, I posted the following warning, and R Legg

Whatever alert it was, it wasn\'t \'high alert\'.

There\'s no evidence of any change to the Russian nuclear
weapons alert status.

RL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since then, Ukraine has destroyed the Crimea bridge, liberated
Kherson, attacked airfields in Russia, and attacked weapons depots
and oil storage facilities in Russia. Despite Russian warnings that
attacks on Russia would result in a nuclear response, there has not
been a whisper from Putin. He did wave the nuke flag recently when
western nations promised to supply modern tanks to Ukraine, but
there was no change in the nuclear status. See
Will Russia use nuclear weapons? Putin\'s warnings explained
So until we see warheads moved from storage and mounted on missiles,
Putin\'s nuclear threats are just bluff.
<snipped information that is unlikely to be relevant >
Strategic nukes - as opposed to tactical nukes - have to be ready to fire at short notice. Mutual assured destruction depends on being able to get your own missiles into the air before they could be destroyed by a pre-emptive strike. Tactical nukes can be protected - to some extent - by dispersion, but strategic nukes are a bit to bulky for this to work. Submarine launched strategic missiles are dispersed, but there wouldn\'t be a lot of point in separating the warheads from the missile inside a submarine, and you wouldn\'t get any kind of early warning if the warheads were being put on the missile inside the submarine.
