My sound card drivers don't provide me with an EQ. There isn't even the
standard Bass/Treble adjustment in the windows mixer.

Does anybody know of a generic application that can provide such a function?

Thanks much!
And yes, I know, what a strange crosspost.. I figure this way I'll get in
contact with a broad array of people.. :)

If the drivers don't have it then it is VERY likely the sound card
hardware doesn't support it.

There's a freeware program called "Midnight Express" that simulates a
wavetable sound card on a basic rig that doesnt physically have one. It only
works for midi files AFAIK but it makes a fair bit of difference to the
sound. Other than that the only way I know is to use plugins with something
like Winamp, that gives you a software pre amp and equaliser built in and
you can get a lot of DSP add on's to fiddle with the sound. I've only just
started playing around with sound stuff so someone more familiar with it
might be able to help you better. There's a site called Shareware music
machine.com at http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/freeware/98/ they seem to have a
utility for just about anything.

Did you check the advanced tab in the windows mixer? If there is a bass
treble control it will be there.

Even boards that don't support eq in hardware will work with applications
that support software eq. The new window media player 10 is quite good.
There are things about it I don't like, but overall, its an excellent app,
and it does include a software EQ.

it's called winamp
it's got a built in software eq that works pretty good
if you need to eq on a live input (instead of a file eg: wav mpeg)
you will need the linein plugin that is available at their site

www.winamp.com

check it out

there are lots of plugins that support dsp

Winamp has one. Thjere is a way to invoke the treble and bass control in
windows. Try alt.win98 or alt.win2000 or alt.os.win20000 or something
like that. They'll straighten you out. maybe even google it. here, I'll
try it.......... Hey, I found an old post by me posted in 1998. here's
what I wrote:

Here's what worked for me..

Tone Controls - The latest AudioPCI / PCI 64 drivers unofficially
support tone controls. To enable this feature, you must edit the
Windows registry. If this makes you feel uncomfortable, read no
further.

Click on the Start button and then click Run. Type regedit in the
input box and press Enter. Expand the tree list by clicking the plus
in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES, System, CurrentControlSet, Services,
Class, and finally Media. Under Media, you should see one or more
numbered entries. Expand each entry until you find the one for the
PCI64. Under its Config section, right click on the "Enable Tone
Controls" and/or "Allow Tone Controls" entry. A pop-up window will
appear. Select Modify and change the value to 01. Now exit the
registry editor and shut down or restart Windows.

Following these same steps again, try modifying the "Allow Speaker EQ"
and/or "Enable Speaker EQ" entry under the Config section. This will
engage an equalizer that should sweeten most audio output.

While this "trick" has provided tone controls for most people, for a
few, it has failed. One reader has suggested a possible fix. He
removed the PCI64 software by running the PCI64 setup program and
selecting the remove only option. Actually, he suggested using an
older AudioPCI setup program. I'm not sure if this is necessary. The
reader then re-installed the PCI64 drivers, restarted Windows, and
Ta-Da! He had tone controls. Maybe it sounds a little strange, but
what the hell.

Another reader has also suggested toggling the Advanced Controls
Option under the Windows Volume Control to off and on again. After
this, his tone controls appeared under the AudioPCI mixer. Again, it
sounds weird, but I guess it's worth a try.

There may be a few annoying side affects experienced while tone
controls are enabled. First of all, while adjusting the base and
treble, the recording sources may become scrambled, so you'll probably
have to reset the sources after each bass/treble adjustment. Also the
tone controls don't affect CD audio, as I believe the audio stream is
currently routed directly to the line-out.

Finally, these bonus features are not officially supported by Ensoniq
or Creative Labs, so please don't contact them for assistance.

This is true, but sometimes they just don't turn on and need a nudge.
