Is it possible to determine by inspection which is the killer square vs.
the winning square?

Thanks,
Rich

Rich, below the 3 can not be a mine, otherwise there wouldnt be enough left
for the 4 on the right.

Sure. I used to do that level in less than 60 seconds, with a record
something under 25 seconds, if I had a food mouse. It's been 10ish
years since I've been that bored though. It doesn't take too long
before you simply recognize patterns and click almost automatically.

Not always. There are some games that come down to a mine in one of two
positions, perhaps in several locationsover the field
As always, it depends. There is (at least was) an option to only give
solvable games.

Also, we can deduce that for the remaining two squares at the left
boundary, the right one contains the mine, because of the 1 and 2 to
its
right.
And the three 1's under it

If you don't mind cheating...

While playing, type xyzzy, then press Enter, then Shift. Now minimize all
your open windows except for Minesweeper so that you can eaisly see your
desktop. A small white pixel will now appear in the upper left corner of the
screen when the cursor is over an unmined square and then disappear when the
cursor is over a mined square. If you are having trouble seeing the pixel
then you might try using a solid, dark color background.

Works on Win2000, on my computer.

Doesn't seem to work for me, unless I just can't see the pixel. )-;

Works for me, but it's *tiny* little bugger on this UXGA ThinkPad
(1600x1200 15" display). Perhaps your display's geometry is off
(screen)?

What? Are you playing a different game? I've been blown away lots of
times on the first square I clicked.

It could very well be.
Yup!

But now, minesweeper suddenly is boring. )-;

Thanks, I guess. ;-)

Kinda like the Bubble Bobble cheat that gives you the diamond rooms even
if you've died - it's fun until you realize all it does is tack a million
points on top of whatever score you'd have gotten anyway.

Then again, it could be handy if you're trying to show off, like to the
PHB. >;->

I wonder if The Amazing Randi knows about it? ;-)

Cheers!

That's not surprising. Nothing else does either.

Doesn't work here on Windows 95 and 98SE.
