Oscilloscope Probes

I am a newby at scopes and have purchased a used Tektronix 2246 100Mhz
4 channel analog scope. I need another probe and I am considering
purchasing a generic probe (from CisuitTest.com) rather than an
expensive Tektronix probe. Is this a mistake? Will the switchable
attenutation work with my scope? Will I need to calibrate the probe
to the scope?

thanks

This is a pretty frequently asked question on this group; a bit of Googling
will get you a thorough answer.

The quick answer is that generic probes will work fine. Yes, you need to
calibrate the probe for high frequency compensation (as is true of any
probe, even a Tek probe). The switchable attenuation will switchably
attenuate; whether it also adjusts the scale indication on the scope depends
on whether it has the correct optional pins on the connector end, and you
can check with the seller to be sure.
