Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the responses I got previously on scopes. I have the opportunity
to purchase a used Tektronix 465. The guy is local too(about 1 hour away) so
I could save shipping costs. He's asking $275 firm. Granted I have seen them
go for cheaper on ebay but then the shipping costs can be high and most used
scopes on ebay don't come with the manual or any probes (more expense). The
one he's selling does "contain manual and probe" stated in his ad and he
also says it is in working order with no external or internal defects. He
has no digital camera but is going to try and take some conventional photos,
perhaps scan or something I don't know.

So I have some more questions for him and I'd appreciate if anybody here
would like to add to this list. Also can anyone tell me what these scopes
came with completely when they were new (extra probe tips, connectors, cover
etc), if it's missing some original stuff perhaps I can use that as
bargaining leverage, he said "probe" in his ad. I assume it came with two,
I'll have to clarify that with him. Here are my questions for him now:

1. Are you the original owner?
2. How long have you owned it?
3. Has it ever been re-calibrated to your knowledge and if so how long ago?
4. Does it come with (blah, blah, blah, insert all original contents here)
5. Can you please be more explicit about it's appearance? (dirt, scratches)
6. Do any of the pots buttons or switches seem overly dirty or scratchy?

That said, assuming it's in good working condition as he states, is $275 a
fair price? Thanks folks.

How about this:

Since he's only an hour away, call him up and tell him you'd like to
come by and take a look at the scope, then put $275 cash in your
pocket and head on over there. Once you get there you can get him to
demo it (so you can find out first-hand whether it works or not, and
how well) and find out what's included and what isn't, etc., etc.,
etc.

Then, either buy it or not, and since you've got cash in your pocket
you might be able to do a little horse trading.

When I bought my tek 465B (is yours a B or an A?), I brought a little
adjustable homemade 555 timer circuit with 2 speaker leads sticking out of
the board so I could input different frequencies and check both channels. I
knew ahead of time they did not come with probes. The 465B was the one I
settled on, this was at a cable company that was liquidating its test
equipment, and they had about 4 or 5 tek scopes left, so I tested them all.
My final price was US $150, but no probes, no manual. That was almost a year
ago and it still works fine. It had last been calibrated in 1991 according
to the sticker on it. I have since found tek 465B manuals on the web, and
bought velleman probes (100MHZ) for $29.95, and it was the best investment I
ever made. Go and visit the guy, bring your money, check it out and maybe
you can haggle a little with him. $275 is probly a fair price if it works
ok, but if you can get it for, say $200, that's even better. You may also
want to check out ebay and see what they are going for there.

Did you happen to locate 465B user, and service manuals in electronic format

Thank you.

Make sure you ask about or preferably check yourself for screen image
"burn-in". This is a permanent image burned into the screen from
having a stationary waveform left on for long periods. A common
problem with second hand abused scopes.
Check what probes it comes with too, they could be cheap crappy low
bandwidth probes which are almost worthless.

$275 for a 465? It had better be in near-mint condition at that
price. $200 is more reasonable for a used one.

This, however, is based on my own regional experience (Pacific
Northwest and Bay Area sources). Things may be different in your area.

At the very least, I would expect it to be fully operational,
preferably calibrated within the last two years, and reasonably clean.

Happy hunting.

I too have already decided that's a bit high especially if it only comes

would be a more acceptable price. Thanks for the response.

Hi Louis,

Yes, I got the link from someone in this group, but I'll be damned if I can
remember the website I got the service manual from. It is in .djvu format
and you have to download the reader from www.lizardtech.com

Maybe the person who originally posted the links can help?

By the way: If you get a 465 scope without a manual, no need to worry:
You can download forfree from bama.sbc.edu or bama.edebris.edu the
complete 465B manual.
Which is 97% compatible to 465 .:)

Some just like to get top dollar, without checking to see what the market is
doing. There are companies out there who sell via catalog/flyer/e-bay who do
the same, at times - worse, with some similar scopes "higher" than $275 and
some of those aren't even to be working! So, you got to wonder why they even
bother. They can't be unloading the stuff too awfully fast. I hate to think
of all the money they've got sitting there collecting dust.

Why not read the FAQ on bama -- so you'd notice that there is no
special userid/PW needed for DOWNLOAD.

But I thing your question aims to ftp-ing in general.
And, as a genaral rule for ftp download: Your User is the well-known
anonymous, your PW is your email address .

It will NEVER work for you when you DO not READ the homepage
thoroughly:

10 users max for bama
50 users bama.edebris.com

Now the 1-million-$-question: Where will your chances be better to get
served?

Try the edebris mirror-site, and you'll be lucky soon :)

hth,
Andreas

PS: And before you run into the next question: You'll need a djvu
browser for the 465b manual from bama. On the homepage, the is the FAQ
that answer how, where and why to get/use it.

I got through, and started downloading it, but it was awfully slow, and
the downloading stopped.

I resumed the transfer, and it stopped again, I resumed and it stopped
again, I resumed and then it stopped with an error, and could not be
resumed again.

So it is obviously not a well working service with minimum of hassle.

Anyhow, it is good that it exists at all, and if I ever get really
desperate for a manual I will try it again.
