ORCAD annotate problem

Hi,
I'm having a problem in annotating my schematic. I annotate on the
schematic w/ the following 2 steps:
1) Reset part references to '?'
2) Incremental update
This gets all the references on the schematic in order. However, when I go
back to layout, I get a large number of errors saying many of the part
footprints cannot be found. Also, many of the parts already placed become
unplaced. Any ideas? Thanks.

The link between a layout and the schematic in OrCad are the reference
numbers of the components. Therefore, once you have a layout made from the
schematic, you should NEVER EVER changes references in the schematic. The
only way to go is to use the incremental update, as this leaves the already
numbered components untouched. Only newly added components get a new number
this way. This will of course leave holes in the numbering when you delete
components during the design proces. Just leave that until your design is
completely finished. When finished, you can renumber the components in OrCad
Layout (not in Schematic!). Choose "Auto->Rename Components". This will
renumber based on the settings in "Options->Components Renaming...". Next do
a backannotate with "Auto->Backannotate", go to Schematic and choose
"Tools->Back Annotate" to get the renumbering into your schematic.
