I have this great old monitor, manufactured
in August 1998 by Viewsonic which I love.

this morning, no power! completely dead, no
power light, nothing.

So I guess something in the power supply
must have given up! Looked at the Viewsonic
website for some info... but the earliest monitor
featured is the Q55. looked at the mainboard
and nothing seems to have burned up. No
parts seems to be overheated or discolored.
The HV XFo does not look like it arced.

Anyone could point me to some info like a
maintenance manual or a schematic. i'd really
like to revive this monitor, can't imagine throwing
away my faithful video interface for the last five
years. Any help would be appreciated.

Model number is VCDTS21456

Thanks in advance

Do a Google groups search in this newsgroup for monitor schematic links.
Troubleshooting a shorted flyback is easy and does not require a schematic
for an experienced technician, just use the standard troubleshooting
techniques.

You should also ESR check all the electrolytic capacitors in the SMPS and
other critical areas, given its old age. (for computer equipment that is
designed for lowest price and to last just past the warranty)

Thanks, David, for the search tip,

I didn't find anything on the model 51, but
I did locate a perfect schematic for another
monitor of mine, my samsung which had been acting up.
Good sites!

The Optiquest monitor was the clearest, cleanest
monitor I ran on my Celeron 400. It has sentimental
value, I guess ;-)

I know these aren't worth much and i shouldn't
bother, but I have a quiet weekend ahead and
I like tinkering with stuff. Hope I won't find too
many of these taiwanese electrolytics in there!
(I have a shoeboxfull of those crappy Luxon caps
as I replace them systematically, on mobos mainly)

besides, I grabbed a spare monitor at the office...
17" NEC XV17+ which was in a closet. I'll have
to get used to the rather large screen realestate
at 1024 x 768!

I call it monitor... Texas style!
