You may want to consider systemc.
All my simple projects of systemc can be accessed from
'VHDL, verilog, design, verification, scripts, ...'

How about Icarus Verilog (www.icarus.com/eda/verilog/open source Verilog
simulator), Verilator (www.veripool.org/wiki/verilator, open source
Verilog to C++/SystemC) and GTKWave (gtkwave.sourceforge.net, open source
VCD viewer).

And as someone else noted there's the SystemC world (www.systemc.org).
