One last hope for fixing 20 inch GE Television.

Hi,
I have a 20 inch GE television, and was just about to replace it but I
thought I give repair one more try. We just moved and since we've been
at the new place the tv hasnt been working, weve been getting godawful
static and interference, audio and visual. I try jiggling the cable
around and it affects the interference, just smacking the tv affects
the interference, if you smack it around and jiggle the cable enough
it comes in perfect, until something upsets it again. I think
something is loose inside, I dont hear anything rattling. The cable
signal is fine. The connection is tight. I tried different cables. I
was hoping somebody would hear that and have an idea what it might be.
Thanks.

Sounds like it's broke and needs fixing. Unless a model and chassis is
indicated you'll recieve these type of recommendations.

It has some kind of internal failure that needs repaired by a qualified and
experienced technician with that specific model and chassis line of Thomson
tv set.

Cold solder joints most likely...I agree with David...find a qualified
tech....that is unless you'd like to perhaps get seriously zapped! TV repair
is quite specialized and not for amats....good luck and hey...don't buy a GE
next time..
They are not known for their reliability....I have had many hauled over here
through the years! I'm a Sony fan but that is liable to start a whole new
thread!....later, Ross

GE? This set is still Thomson's. RCA, GE same thing, quality all
the same across low end all the way to high end stuff. TV doesn't
matter where the flaws is. JVC is expensive but they also have
failures like the RCA are. This what keeps us in employment.

Sony does have their problems too, ditto to junky & generics ones.
It's waste of time to prattle about singling a brand out. The biggest
pain in ass is everybody who is using AKB in some sets not just
Sony's. AKB cuts the point where tube is still useable after period
of service. I prefer to see a setting to switch this off.

Cheers,

Wizard

Your local TV service man can fix this for you. There are some cold solder
connections in various places. This can happen from age. Bring the set to a
service centre, and they can jig up the chassis and troubleshoot it.

No matter what brand they all come in for repair. I just got done
replacing a bad thermistor on a 13 month old KV27FS Sony & few months
ago I replaced a bad pin amp transistor on a 2 year old KV32FS. The old
Sony's were made much better. We've got a late 70's Sony up at our cabin
that still works great (I did replace the V-REG in 86) & gets frozen
every year when we shut the cabin down for winter. When I last checked
Consumer Reports in '96, Sony was in the top 5 of high failure TVs along
with RCA, GE, Proscan & Zenith. I don't know what brand to recommend to
customers anymore but I
do tell them to defintely stay away from the off brands (I just fixed a
4 month old Sansui that died right after the 90 day parts & labor
warranty was up!)

www.repairfaq.org has all the information you need.
Be FOREWARNED, this is NOT a job for someone without LOTS of experience
removing solder and properly resoldering around high density surface mount
components. A botched repair by an inexperienced person may make the set
beyond cost effective repairs. If you do a Google Groups search here there
are many posts of people who tried and failed to repair the problem.

Without the proper temperature controlled soldering station and better than
excellent soldering skills and some experience with the chassis, you are
better off having someone who has repaired many of these with the special
solder and added jumpers do the repair. Typically under a $65 total repair
bill if you take the set in, call around and specifically ask how many of
the Thomson tuner ground jobs they have performed to service bulletin
specifications and a ballpark average price.

If you continue running the set the eeprom will become corrupted and you
will be looking at a higher repair bill.

Looks like I did it....I started a whole new thread...
I don't think it matters what brand you suggest...there will always be
several folks that don't like it...
I do enjoy my 36 inch sony hdtv and so far it has been bullet proof...time
will tell....take care all....Ross

You know Jerry....I have thought for many years that if the television
industry would only use double sided boards with plated through holes, most
of these cold solder problems would go away. I guess it is planned
obsolesence....when the only connection is a solder filet on a single piece
of foil...well where is the engineering there?
Have a great one, Ross

Hahaha... double sided boards in TVs? Depends who is doing the
quality design. I had a Samsung LCD come in dead, the power
connection on the signal conversion board was bad had to clean up &
resolder. But it is GOOD STUFF but some are known to cut corners and
use conductive paint instead of jumpers or plated vias.

Cheers,

Wizard.

Hi Jason,

Hey I have seen PC board manufacturers do all sort of riciculous stuff like
that to get a board to pass electrical test. How about painting a plated
through hole with conductive paint...or my favorite!....using a green
sharpie for solder mask touch up.
And you are right...connectors are a big failure item...They save a couple
of bucks by using cheap connectors and the repair industry makes a fortune
fixing them...
"There is a TV God!"....Have a great weekend....Ross
