So it\'s effectively a free vaccine, available around the globe? Sounds like potentially very good news.

Indeed! Certainly beats an imuno-supressive clot-shot by a country
mile.

We will find out very very soon. South Africa has a very young
demographic so you wouldn\'t expect them to be badly affected.
UK had nearly 30k new omicron cases yesterday (out of 78k) and another
40k today (in addition to the baseline of 50k of the delta variant).
Working back from today\'s numbers and the geographic locations where it
now accounts for more than 50% of cases the original locus of infection
was the COP26 conference in Glasgow and tourists in London.
https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-omicron-overtakes-delta-as-dominant-coronavirus-variant-in-london-as-cases-surge-across-uk-12496452
Doubling time is estimated to be around 2-3 days for omicron in the UK\'s
rather too relaxed setting where the government has been saying until
yesterday don\'t cancel your Xmas parties. Yesterday was the watershed
when we had more new daily Covid cases than at any time in the pandemic!
We still have football matches, large venues and discos open. Some shows
in London have had to close because key members of the cast have Covid
and football matches because of players catching it.
Give it another week and omicron cases will exceed the delta cases here
by some margin and we will like last year be forced into lockdown for
Xmas (it is that or allow the NHS to collapse completely).
Hard to know which choice our \"government\" will take this time. They
have managed to ignore the scientists for just long enough to let things
get completely out of control again. It is like GroundHog Day here

Did you see the Select Committee questions to Whitty et al this morning?
Quite informative. It seems the \"R\" value for Omicron is probably in
excess of 4!

I think you\'ll find Omicron >> Delta by Sunday.

\"Too Little Too Late\" always seems to be the order of the day. :-(
An old friend sent me an interesting personal account from his daughter
(and others) at St Thomas\' Hospital as the Covid crisis developed last
year. It\'s here:
https://guysandstthomas.shorthandstories.com/amy-story/index.html
What I found most powerful and memorable was the sentence: \"There was a
pervading atmosphere of contagion and infection and people talking about
death.\"
That could have been written in 1350 about The Black Death! Plus ça
change, plus c\'est la même chose...

I didn\'t see it but I\'m not at all surprised. The cases per day graph
has become exceedingly steep. I really don\'t like R as a measure - it is
far too sloppy. The case doubling time is a much more direct measure and
much harder to fake. R depends on to many unmeasurable assumptions up to
and including which side of bed the researcher got out of!

It is certainly looking that way. I got my Pfizer booster yesterday so I
need to stay out of trouble for another 10 days. I hope this may be
fairly easy since the NE is mercifully free of omicron for the moment.
The recent explosion (like last years) is almost certainly due to end of
university term plus one incubation period spreading the novel omicron
infection from London, Glasgow and Edinburgh to all over the country.
(last years Xmas present from the students was alpha)

They were only a week too late this time (rather than a month).

At least this modern plague only kills at most 1% of the population.
We could do with a few high profile refusenik footballers expiring from
it since they seem determined to set a very bad example. More than half
the scheduled matches are now cancelled due to teams having Covid.
There are a few good guys in the football arena too like Klopp:
