old cell phones--what to do with?

Is there any practical use for older cell phones? Or, do you just toss 'em
out?

Seems a shame to throw 'em away, but I don't see any kind of use for
them----especially the ones which aren't digital.

Some countries(and rural areas) still use analog service. Or you can use an old
digital as a "car phone" - who would steal one of those big phones?
Here in Brazil analog service is getting less common. But it still exists in
some places.

If the batteries are still able to hold the charge, or not too expensive to
replace, and if there is service in your area that is compatible, why not
give them to some elderly people, or someone who can really use a phone, and
cannot afford to pay for a new one.

I have a few older phones that I left activated, just to use as a spare, or
for emergencies.

There is an outfit that checks 'em and gives them
to physical abuse victims to call 9-1-1 with; don't
recall the name. A local shelter contact could help.

If they are faulty, one idea is to strip the good parts (displays,
etc) from them and then sell the parts. Often you find people are
willing to pay a few $ for a known good
display/case/mainboard/whatever to get an old phone that they paid a
lot for, working again.

Federal law requires that even if the phone doesn't have activation, it
still can access 911 service. Local schools were asking for donations of
them for use by school bus drivers.

The only real good use for obsolete cellular telephones is for 9-1-1 calls. By
federal law, a 9-1-1 call can also be made on a deactivated cell phone.

As for activating these obsolete phones, why?

Activation is going to cost more to the user initially than simply signing up
for a contract to get a phone for free with the activation fee waived, provided
that you adhere to the stipulation of staying with your service provider for
the amount of time specified. This is also assuming that the phone is
supported on a network to begin with or that the outfit is willing, or able, to
activate the phone. - Reinhart

In the UK (at least) you can donate old mobiles to charity - for
example to keep emergency paramedic helicopters going.
There's gold in them thar phones...

I carry a de-activated cell phone in my truck just in case I need to call
911. Have no need for an activated one.
