OH BOY, HERE WE GO...

I would like to build a portable battery power supply for my portable
USB hard drive/CD/DVD enclosures.

Based on the cover of the normal power supply, it delivers: +5V/1.5A
and +12V/1.5A to the enclosure.

For size and performance, it was suggested I start with two 9.6V
1800mAh R/C type batteries.

I was told I should avoid the cheap, inefficient Radioshack type
voltage regulators as a good portion of energy is wasted as heat.
I was told I need the efficient stepping kind which start with a part #
of LN or LNB - if someone could provide those two part #'s that'd be
great.

I understand I need two of those regulators, to step up to +12V 1.5A
and of course one to step down to +5V 1.5A. Who knows if up to 1.5A is
actually drawn, but I want to have that capability. A 56X CD burner
doesn't burn out the plug-in supply.

Now I know I need some caps, resistors & other components, but my
knowledge is rudimentary so I have NO IDEA what I need, sorry...this is
a .basics posting.

With the help of a book, I could read a diagram and have the tools and
aptitude to build this thing, just coming up short on the components
knowledge.

Yes I know this is a simple project to some, but help greatly
appreciated.

Yes this was posted with Google, ports not open at work for newsreader.

Yes, you can save the flamemail about etiquette or knowledge, etc,
other comments for another day.

Thanks in advance,
D

OH, I would also like to have an undervolt lockout capability as I'm
sure a harddrive would not respond well.

Connect the batteries in series for about 18 volts. Then buy two
packaged 3-terminal buck switching regulator boards from Mouser or
Digikey, one for +5 and one for +12, about $15 each. You can't make it
out of parts for much less, and the Mouser things will work right out
the box.

Or sign up for engineering school.

I know, and you're the way too smart, arrogant, nerd newsgroup police
who can't refuse the comment? Need a girlfriend? Not spending enough
time with the current one?

Having trouble letting go of trying to so how sarcastic and what a
smart technical monkey you are? I come here when I need something,
seems you post just to post; be it to comment on "newsgroup etiquette"
or subject lines...or whatever your narrow point of view leads you to
believe.

I'll let you have the last word, I know you can't resist showing off
your witty response - ego I suppose. Have at it son. I'll be back the
next time I need something.

Right, ego is a long winded response, or a lesson... You're trying so
hard to be right, and you have all the evidence in the world to be
right, that's ego.

I got what I wanted, my goal was fullfilled - I ALWAYS get help here
and will continue to do it my way, because it works me. YOu do what
works for you.

Talk about ego, you want me to do what works for YOU, why whould I?
There's no lesson from you, why would I take one from you? What have
you done that would enroll me to see your way except be sarcastic?

That's not enrolling... What's in it for me? Presented another way, I
might have considered. Is that you Andrew? Being a jerk is cracking
me up...

So, we can continue to slap cocks together, be right. That's fine.

"You get help here for free. You are wasting the time of people who
decide
to read your post, but can't help you. You mislead people."

Key word is "decide." Choice, you know what that means, right? You
did it, you should know, you chose to read it.

Does it irk you that I got a response right away? An actual
resolution? I bet it does.

*Your* words imply you covet this forum, and insist on compliance, yet
does continuing to slap cocks with me in this sci.electronics.basics
venue really in the spirit of this group? The hypocrisy.

It could be your trying to be right about it, because you're the monkey
that "decided" to read it. You didn't have to, but you did, you
decided. You had a choice, there's freedom in that don't you think?
You really didn't have to, but you did. So, you can be a baby about
your choice, or you can let it go. I doubt you can however, too much
ego.

It doesn't matter... my posting irritates people like you, that's the
whole point. Hook, line, and sinker. I get what I want, and I get to
laugh at YOUR DECISION to read waste your time quibbling arrogant
nonsense.

Paying people? Are YOU stupid? They decided to read. Roped in your
sucker-ass didn't it? ...and it's hilarious that you can't quit. You
HAVE to be right. It's a programmer thing, which is why in our
opinion, you'll always work for someone else rather than lead; no
creative thinking outside your little Perl box.

You really think your condescending cracks, calling people stupid will
actually enroll someone? Make a difference? How about a calm, polite
request? You're obviously not a teacher or a leader, just some little
code-shitter protected by anonymity.

Seeing as you can't let go of being right (people who have to be right
always have mountains of evidence to support them), it seems you have
not considerded the fact that you've been baited like a child.

Sorry for messing with you, although we doubt you'll ever get over it.
Thanks for the humor. You postings continue to amuse a number of us.

Oh, and of course I know how to post you little PerlMonkey, been
posting for 18 years now. I just CHOSE not to conform to standards
because amusing to me to see the Usenet Police monkeys come out of the
woodwork. It's good to shake things up once in a while.

The use of personal cracks is the sign of an idiot, but I'm sure you
knew this. Of course, you'll excerpt this, and put in your response
with another personal crack. Seems that's all you know how to do
youngster. Geez, you take it soooo personal...hook, line and sinker,
baited like a little boy.

C'mon, let's see something more original.

If you read before all your childlike personal cracks, you'd see that
the ports (this includes 119) are not open for a much nicer newsreader.
Of course Google Groups sucks.

You either are not capable of answering the following question, or you
insist on being my son.

Why do you continue to amuse? You like swinging your cock around like
you're the authority? You have to be right?

Thanks for the amusement.

Of course it's laziness, why should I be obliged to paste anything.
This is play time. I already got an answer son.

Actually, I feel sorry for you now. I now see why you're so biting
here, can't let go of being right, and the personal cracks. You f**ked
up boy.

Jim and Laurinda sound better off in New Zealand. The ex probably
found a replacement anyway, they have a new daddy.

Sounds like YOU'VE been the one who needed the help. When you were
depressed, why didn't you just put two in your forehead? Now all your
anger and depression spill out into this arena. Silliness. At least
in Mexico you have easy access to firearms and can finish yourself off
if you ever get that low again.

"What does your daddy do?" Jim answers, "He chats on the Internet,
swinging his little thingy around like he's the man."

Like you surmise about this side of the world I could surmise you're a
prototypical sociopathic programmer, into star wars, plays computer
games endlessly, depressed, watches anime, chats online most of the
day, blah blah. How would I know, I'm probably making it up. You know
how it is, you've been doing it.

In this forum however, you're full of all kinds of bravado.

No no, the pleasure is mine.

*Sigh* C'mon, fire up another predictable response, embedded with the
same old play & copy/paste of these words.

One would think Hollanders were pacifists, guess not - Suriname or
Indonesia.

You talk as if you know what you're talking about. Everything said
about you is an assumption, I no more know you than dog shit. I bet
you're a really nice ProgrammerMonkey in person. Shy, quiet, brainy,
nerdy, into star wars, minimal or weird social grace, probably
depressed. Again, just speculation on my part, same as you ignorantly
surmise.

Oh, but in this forum, wow, you've got quite the bravado, quite the big
boy we are. Nice example for Jim and Laurinda.

"What does your daddy do little boy?" Jim says, "He swings his cock
around like he's the man behind Internet anonymity. He's Usenet Police
coz he's got nuffin better to do with his time." Sheesh, no wonder you
get so personal and biting here, you're life is all fucked man. Good
luck with the kids. It seems understandable to be a father that far
away.

Look forward to the amusing and predictable response.
