nutty question

Got a nutty sounding (to me at least) computer question that I couldn't find
a better place to ask than here.

Can someone send or receive fax documents via their computer if they're on
DSL or cable? I've always been told you gotta have a fax modem and phone
line to handle the calling up part. If true, it probably leaves cable out
of the picture. But, what about using a dialup modem with DSL???

Just curious

Hi...

You can install a conventional modem along with your
dsl and use that with a telephone line to deliver
fax's...

And years ago, perhaps 15 or 20 when long distance still
cost a fortune, there was a free fax server somewhere
out there on the internet. You simply emailed the
fax you wanted delivered to that site with the fax
number you wanted it delivered to as the subject.

They would deliver it for you, and send you back a
return receipt.

Don't know if it still exists or not, perhaps
google would turn up something.

Take care.

You have to use your dialup modem for faxing. Yes, there's no problem doing
it.

You need a dialup modem with fax compatibility, and the fax software
installed to do faxing with your computer. The high speed modem and access
has nothing to do with this.

You can have a serial or USB type fax modem. I myself prefer the serial type
modem for anything that has to do with modems on telephone lines. I have
clients with 2 and more fax modems on a machine, and multiple telephone
numbers (lines) for it. It can do multiple faxing with this set-up. It is
possible to have many if required. It is also possible to forward a fax from
one client to the other as required. It can be sending and receiving faxes
simultaneously with this set-up.

I tried the internet FAX service a number of years ago. I found it to be
slow. After a while they were asking for payments for each fax. I would
suggest to have a fax modem and a scanner. For me a dedicated fax machine
would be the best in most cases. Infact, I have both the computer, and a
dedicated fax machine.

I had a customer who tried that with orders to my firm. The faxes--which
were multi-line order forms--came out looking fine, but often there would be
one or two lines missing. This was disasterous as those missing lines often
contained valuable information. With the design of that particular form,
one could only tell they were not present by counting the lines and
comparing against an original.

After a couple of missed orders on my part, they quickly went back to a POTS
solution.

Take care.

Apart from the various ugly pieces of fax software out there !

easyfax.com seems to have departed. I never did see how they could
make any money. That allowed you a quota of national/international
faxes, and appended a page of advert to the (plain text) fax.
