No traffic?

There is a discussion on news.groups if low traffic groups should be
removed from the news hierarchy.

Our thre comp.lsi groups are among the candidates. Over the last 12 months
506 groups have had less than 150 messages.

Some sitations from
news:3TZsd.8178$714.1173@newsread2.news.atl.earthlink.net - Low Traffic Big
8 groups for 12 months ending November 2003

Will these groups be removed? Not necessarily, nor automatically.
First, a moderator may preserve their own group. Second, it may be
decided that there are more than 50 arguably on-topic messages.
Third, it may be decided that there is sufficient response to a
message posted to the group. And fourth, 25 persons may respond to a
poll to retain the group. There are also a few groups that are not
eligible for removal because they were recently created. A newly
created group has a year to establish itself, and then another year of
low traffic before it can be considered for removal.

For our part of the world, the figures are:
comp.lsi . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20
comp.lsi.cad . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 57
comp.lsi.testing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10
---------

I have been watching these groups for some months now, and been really
amazed of the low, or rather non-existent traffic compared to 10-15 years
ago. But of course. The world has changed, and the technology is stable, and
the challenges are not as obvious, and there is a lot of information
available on the internet. it is even possible to find it through the search
engines.

Maybe we just don't need these groups any more? Maybe Usenet is no longer
the great answer? And maybe evereybody has left the scene?

Hmm...I have to respond to this - or at least prolong the discussion.

I think to some degree there is a chicken and egg situation here. I
have been watching this group for some time as well as other groups. I
do not post questions / comments / etc here because the group appears
not to change very much - ie, I would not expect lively responses. I
post in other groups where the traffic is so high that regardless of
how rediculuous my suggestions, I always find someone who agrees and
someone who disagrees.

I wonder how many out there are in the same boat, so to speak? Is this
a "zombie" group that everyone watches, but no one posts to? Are we
all waiting for someone to start a new thread? Or is there really no
one out there watching at all?

Chris
