I discovered that Radio Shack's DC converter kit was a really
nifty way to turn 3 volts into 9 volts not only for transistor
radios but for other items that need a hefty amount of current.
But, of course, Radio Shack discontinued it almost right after it
was on the market.

I have the schematics and most of the parts is standard, easy to
find items, but the one thing I am having a devil of a time
finding is the crucial TL499A IC. Does anyone know of a source for
this elusive chip?

Hi Ron,

Texas lists them as active and at 67 cents budgetary pricing, meaning
they've got to be still very popular:

http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tl499a.html

So you should be able to buy it through them or at many other places.

If you only need a couple, the local TI rep will probably
send you samples for nothing. When you call, sound like
a big company with 100,000/yr in mind. :)

Cheers!

Since the thing is discontinued, can you post the schematic on
alt.binaries.schematics.electronic?

Thanks,

I'd be glad to Bob, but my scanner at the moment is as dead as the
proverbial dodo. It might be a few days before I can get a new
one, but once I do, I'll post it for whoever wants to build the
circuit.

Look for it between this Saturday and next Monday if things go
well.

Thanks Paul, I had Digikey's 1300 page catalog at hand and
couldn't find it anywhere.

I'm not sure why I even keep their catalog anymore. The web site
rocks for part searches.

Most of the parts "is" standard, and the TL499 is "elusive"?

TL499 is "NON-STOCK" at DigiKey- it is in stock @ $0.89 quantity one at
Mouser.

FindChips.com shows Digi-Key, Allied and Rochester have stocks.

Amen, brother.

I'm not sure why I even keep their catalog anymore.

Once I have a page number and a location on the page,
if I want to scan a range of parts, dead-tree format is easier for me.
I hate PDFs.

Actually I got it done sooner than I had expected. The schematics
are posted there now.
