A Carencro man accused of raping a 7-year-old boy and exposing him to
the AIDS virus could face the death penalty.

Assistant District Attorney Pat Magee said authorities are seeking the
harshest penalty possible against Conwell Cormier, 29, who was indicted
Wednesday by a Lafayette grand jury.

“At this moment, we are not entertaining or offering any plea deal in
this case,” Magee said Thursday.

Cormier is being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a
$1 million bond.

Cormier was arrested April 1 on a warrant by Lafayette deputy marshals
after a three-month investigation into allegations that the boy was
sexually assaulted in the 200 block of Beau Basin Road. Authorities said
the crime occurred in December.

Two days after he was arrested for aggravated rape, Cormier was charged
with causing intentional exposure to the AIDS virus, according to the
Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the medical
condition of boy is being withheld in compliance with federal medical
privacy laws.

Cormier was living in a trailer park along Beau Basin Road at the time
of the assault, authorities said. The victim is not related to Cormier,
according to Capt. Kip Judice, the sheriff’s office spokesman.

According to Louisiana state law, prosecutors may seek capital
punishment on an aggravated rape charge if the victim is under the age
of 13. If convicted, a jury would decide whether Cormier would receive
the death penalty or a life sentence without parole, probation or
suspension of sentence. If Cormier is convicted for intentionally
exposing the boy to the AIDS virus, he could face up to 10 years in
prison with or without hard labor, according to state law.

“We agree with the findings of the grand jury and are prepared to
proceed forward and prosecute this matter in a vigorous manner,” Magee said.

Before his arrest, Cormier had only a minor charge on his record for
nonremoval of a junk vehicle in 2006.
