The 10-year-old boy was walking down an alley in Englewood when he
stopped to tie his shoe and noticed a man rushing up to him.

He took off running and the man began running too, reaching out and
trying to grab him. The boy ducked between two abandoned buildings
where, luckily, two Streets and Sanitation workers were making their
rounds in the 7100 block of Sangamon Avenue Thursday morning.

One of the workers, Alfreda Clark, asked the little boy if he was OK.
"No, he's chasing me," the boy told her. As he spoke, the workers saw
the man come out of the alley.

Clark and the other worker, Mary Baggett, took the boy into their car
and called police. The workers then took the boy to a friend's home and
the boy called his father.

“I’m very glad I could help him,’’ Baggett said. “If I could do it
again, I would."

At a news conference this afternoon at the Englewood District police
headquarters, Clark said that at first, she was going to reprimand the boy.

“I was going to chastise the boy for going between two abandoned
buildings, because I’m thinking, ‘You could get hurt in there.’”

“He had fear all over his face, and I asked him, ‘Are you all right?’
and then I asked him again, ‘Are you all right?’ and he said, ‘He’s
chasing me.’”

Clark and Baggett took the boy in their car, and followed the man,
making sure they could describe him well to police.

While they were following the man, “I constantly made sure I asked, are
you sure this is the man, and he said, yes, I’m sure. He was chasing
me,” Baggett said.

Baggett then called 911, and the two women brought the boy to his
sister’s house, where he was heading before he was followed.

Police were able to catch George Graves nearby, in the 7000 block of
South Carpenter Street after Englewood District beat officers sent out a
flash message with his description.

Graves, 57, who lives on the South Carpenter block, was charged with
attempted kidnapping. Graves has prior arrests for aggravated battery to
a child, violating an order of protection, heroin manufacture or
distribution and marijuana manufacture or distribution, police said.
