A Jefferson Parish grand jury on Thursday charged a Marrero man with
murdering a 3-year-old boy and trying to murder the toddler's mother.
Timmie A. Reed, 35, is accused of killing Desmond Brown and trying to
kill Lakisha Brown, 34, who was Reed's girlfriend.
Pathologists concluded that Desmond
died from "homicidal asphyxiation," which generally includes
strangulation or suffocation. Authorities think he died on Feb. 12 or
13, according to the bill of indictment filed Thursday in the 24th
Judicial District Court in Gretna.
Lakisha Brown found her son's body late in the morning of Feb. 13, under
dirty clothing in their home at 2061 Rue Racine in Marrero, according to
the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Deputies found two cans of
gasoline in the home. A Sheriff's Office spokesman has said that
deputies think Reed was going to use the gasoline to start a fire.
Reed is held in the parish jail in Gretna in lieu of a $1 million bond,
of which $750,000 was set Thursday by Judge Donnie Rowan of the 24th
Judicial District Court. Until Thursday morning, Brown had no bond set
for the murder charge.
In addition to murder and attempted murder charges, Reed initially was
booked with attempted aggravated arson. Magistrate Commissioner Carol
Kiff in March found sufficient evidence to keep Reed jailed on all three
charges, court records show.
The grand jury indicted Reed only on the murder and attempted murder
charges. Brown's case was allotted to Judge Conn Regan of the 24th
Judicial District, court records show.
Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence in prison upon
conviction. Attempted second-degree murder carries a sentence of as long
as 50 years.
