What's the difference? To prevent overcharging?

Hi,

requires constant current supply, with voltage monitoring until reaches
fully charged threshold, then goto trickle charge. Simple chargers just use
a series resistor, which is not good for long term battery life. Do a search
on 'NiCD chargeing" and you should get all the info you need.

Ordinary power supplies = nominally constant voltage.

NiCd chargers = nominally constant current (with complex overcharge
detection circuits).
