I was listening to the news on the radio to a small segment .

``Shopping for a new tv `` well the prices may double because the US
cannot compete with the chinese market so a teriff will be put in place
to stop the cheap stuff from ruining the american market .

Wouldn`t that be nice !

Most of the TV sets and monitors for North America are assembled in North
America. Most of them are assembled in Mexico, and some in the US and
Canada. The boards themselves can be made anywhere. The final assembly and
calibration is location sensitive. There are many technical reasons for
this. The CRT's are sensitive to the earth's magnetic deviation, therefore
the purity and convergence set-up has to be done in area of the world where
the set will be used.

The problem (depending on who's perspective you are on) will be with the new
technology used in the LCD, Plasma, Organic LED displays (coming soon), and
DLP screens. These are not as sensitive to the earth's field. Therefore they
can be assembled most anywhere. This means that all the assembly can be
done in the cheapest part of the world, thus contributing to the increasing
the unemployment in this industry here in North America.

In my opinion, if the assembly is to be done outside of North America, I
would agree that there should be a high enough tax on the item to make a
deterrent to the manufactures to keep assembling their products here in
North America. Higher prices in this case will mean less retail sales, and
the profit margins back to the manufactures will be even lower. Therefore,
to keep the volumes up, they will have to make their products locally.

If they are able to still keep in business and not manufacture their
products locally, I hope that the income from the added tariffs can be used
to improve education, health care, and the environment. We have a very big
disposal problem with all the old products that we are throwing away, and an
increase of cardiovascular disease, and cancer among our population.

The effect of layoffs in a single industry will in some ways effect many
other types of industries. In basic economics, the people who work at a
particular job, must spend their money on other products, thus helping to
keep the circle going of keeping each other employed. If this circle of
employment is too vastly broken, then the effect of the job layoffs, and
unemployment will spread around to other industries. In small areas,
especially mining towns, and the fishing industry, the example of this has
been well demonstrated on a small scale.

I would rather have to save a little longer to have a TV, car, or an
appliance, made locally and support my fellow workers, than have it made in
some other part of the world where they have little caring or support for
us, or contribute anything back to us!

Name me a manufacturer that builds consumer TV's in the US.
Chassis, pix tubes and all. Do you really think a US manufacturer
could build a 19" TV here and sell it for $100?

Now, there is a on going issue of ocean freight companies raising
there rates which will ultimately raise the price of some imported goods.

The US consumer electronics market was lost ti imports years ago.
Hell, where do you think most seagate or maxtor hardrives are made?

Wouldn't bother me any, maybe quality would start to creep back.

Or in a Helmholtz coil.

Not only that it would make repairing them worth while again and boost
the value of used sets too .
