Mostly you get links to abstracts. The journals are still mostly by
expensive subscription.

Yep. And even the IEEE now wants $30 per month to search papers :-(

CISTI used to do that FOR YOU, for the same money, in hard copy.

Those were the days.

Oh, I'm not worried about killfiles. I've just taken on a
couple of monickers to kind of separate out serious shit,
metaphysical/magickal shit, and really really off-the-wall
shit. It seems people get confused so easily. Rich does
know a bit of electronics, so I didn't want him to get
buried in my own noise. ;-)

You do. I got 16 for "a w sloman", and the first entry has three
citations. The rest have only one citation between them (and that one
is a self-citation) so I've got to raise my own game more than
somewhat.

It really serves to show what a busy guy I've been. I'd forgotten about
half the stuff listed.

That's actually a very innovative and thoughtful way to do it.
It allows the reader who only wants to read what Rich The
Engineer writes to avoid the other posts.

I killfile by ranges, and check to see whether there happen
to be two posters in the same range (hasn't happened yet.)
In cases where there is no IP Address, I go by a combination
of the Path, Newsreader, date format, and any other
identifiers I can see in the headers.

Heh. Thanks for this, Guy, but just because I'm addicted to the
illusion of integrity, I have to report that I'm not a "real" Engineer.
The closest I could really technically get might be "de facto" engineer,
with a lower-case 'e', but things like "engineering technologist,"
"engineering consultant", and so on might sound impressive, but the
"highest" I've ever "officially" got along those lines has been
engineering tech.

Time to expose this fraud... <grin

Folks, I had lunch with Rich one fine day. Don't believe what he
say above; he knows more than quite a few who have "engineer" as
their job titles.

As for education, consider Michael Faraday, the discoverer of
....
All without a scrap of formal education.
Um, is this kind of a left-handed complement? Yes, we had lunch, and you
bought, but I do, in fact, have a scrap or two of formal education. I'd
prefer to think of myself as an Edison who hasn't found his Rockefeller
yet, or a Tesla - yeah, that's the one! ;-)

Maybe it's safe to post this:
http://home.earthlink.net/~entheos_engineering/

You'll see my self-listed job title, "Contract Inventor."

But thanks for the publicity!

Cheers!

If you are familiar with the field, you probably know ways of
getting to the full contents without paying $.

I typed my name in, found abstracks of all the papers I'd published,
and discovered that the links Google provided wouldn't give me the
full contents, just the abstract. But if I go to http://xxx.lanl.gov/
the full papers are there (well, their preprints at least.)

For fields other than physics I'm not so sure where to find free versions.
Many times the authors have either the paper or (even better) more
detailed information on their web pages, at least in the case of
academic research where you have to advertise yourself as much as possible.
Reproducing the paper on your website usually violates the copyright
you signed away when you published, but I've never heard of a publisher
caring very much. And the publisher cannot stop you from putting more detailed
information up instead of the paper.

If Google did link to the free versions, they would probably step on some
publisher's toes and get sued.

A free electronic citation index would be useful to me, too, but again
I'm sure Google would step on somebody's toes.

Tim.

Actually, I was hoping to get Aylward's knickers in a wad and
to see him sputtering on about how You, I, Faraday, and anyone
else who isn't K.A. is an idiot. Nothing nicer that Aylward-
baiting on a fine weekend afternoon! :)

Boy, you _have_ been leading a sheltered life! ;-) You've been
studiously avoiding the Seim/Bloggs snit and the Clarence/Fields/
Porcine Urinary Vesicle/that other guy silliness, amongst other
miscellany.

Come on, Guy! You're a grown-up! Jump in there with both feet!
You can handle it! It's awfully neat, knowing I can let my inner
child play to his heart's content, while I play adult and stupidvise.
Oh, wait a minute - I'm supposed to be RTE. ;-) For this, I blame
alcohol. For the lapse, that is.

And speaking of baiting, as far as Kevin's treatise on memes
goes, it's pretty much as accurate as any other source on the
subject. So, nanner nanner. ;-)

(am I Macon-baiting? Are you a Master? ;-) )

Cheers!
Rich, signed as the E, but quite high, thank you very much. %-}
