Ebay can yield great results but its a bit too general, and for every
useful component there's a million beanie babies (yeah I know, search
search search). There was once an attempt to have a
sci.electronics.buysell N/G but it got deep sixed to something like
misc.industry.electronics.somethingorother (the usenet equivalent of
Pitcairn Island) because some purists didn't like the idea of trading in
a sci.* group (throw the merchants out of the temple etc).
A brave soul set up a website "Electron Bay" for just this sort of thing
but it never got off the ground despite intelligent page design.
The need still exists for broker free electronic bits trading.

The group you were thinking of is misc.industry.electronics.marketplace. It
still exists and is active, though not nearly as much as the sci.electronics.*
groups.

I wasn't suggesting that I either like eBay or think it would suffice
for what you want, I was more-or-less simply admitting that it's what I use
because it seems to have the largest selection. But I'm not sure how you'd
define "repair parts" so as to distinguish them from the Electronic
Components section of eBay -- maybe some of the larger lots there aren't
quite what you had in mind, but for every 1000-lot there are 10-lots as
well.
