Google fucked it all up. Now I think I am going to get Thunderbird and use AIOE.

I need some hints on what to do. I do not remember how I did it last time, it was looking like the ISP was blocking and I did get through with Thunderbird. I got back and the Google interface was working so I paid no mind.

So here on Chrome right now it looks like it used to but at the top it says new google groups will be replacing this soon so it is only a matter of time.

If you want me around, whether you agree with me or want to try to pick on me, WTF ?

I am getting so sick of this motherfucking shit. It was working fine, there was nothing to fix. I been to the new Google groups, once I FINALLY found how to make a new post there was no place to put a fucking title.

So like AIOE and Thunderbird ?

I am not paying extra to get here, the ISP is enough. So if I can\'t get here then I won\'t be here.

I use Thunderbird and AIOE. I like it and recommend it. On rare
occasions, AIOE goes offline for a short while. That\'s okay with me
because I realize some maintenance needs to be done. As I said, it is rare.

Thunderbird will do much of everything that you need, \"automatically\",
regarding sorting out how to connect to the news server (that you\'ve chosen).

\"File | New | Other Accounts\"
Select \"Newsgroup account\"
Give yourself a name/handle...
.... and an email address
Specify name of NNTP server (\"NNTP.AIOE.org\")
Pick a name that you\'ll use to think about this account (\"My News Feed\")

Thunderbird will sort out all the details, thereafter. You\'ll just have
to decide which newsgroups you want and tell Tbird to download ALL or SOME of
the messages found there.

Welcome to the era of software-as-a-service! (that can be changed at the
providers whim)

I tried this with newsguy.com but couldn\'t figure out how to tell
Thunderbird what my username and password are, so it never could connect.
I\'m really tired of Windows Live, sigh :). Any advice? I never found
anything useful in the Thunderbird online help. Thanks in advance.

I use news://news.thecubenet.com which has a rich array of NGs; if i
remember correctly, they avoid/discourage/not carry pictorial NGs
(binaries). They do have ABSE but that NG is almost dead now.

They charged me something ($10.00?) ages ago and not a penny since.
More reliable than Earthlink ever was.

Dunno about Thunderbird, i use SeaMonkey.

After you\'ve created the account (in Tbird), select the account (left click on
the friendly name you gave it in left pane). In the right pane, you should
see sections for \"Newsgroups\", \"Accounts\", \"Advanced Features\". Under
Newsgroups, click on \"Manage newsgroup subscriptions\".

Tbird will contact your configured news server to fetch the list of newsgroups.
Prior to doing so, it will request your user name and password (if your
news server requires this). It will also offer to store these, for you,
so it can issue them as needed, going forward.

(You can examine the stored credentials under \"Tools | Options | Security |
Passwords\")

I think I have it now. Since newsguy insists on a secure connection I had
gone into the server setup and turned on ssl, and I was never getting the
username and password request. I turned ssl off and then I was asked for
username and password, and it has started (very slowly :)) downloading the
list of groups. Assuming that finishes I should be in good shape. Thank
you.

PS - You could 3d print a new box cover with mounting ears or tabs or
whatever to secure your horn on the backside and still have a plain, smooth
frontside. That would also let you contour the hole to match the horn. You
never mentioned quantities so I was assuming one. If the number is small
there might be a makerspace or a library with a hobby space close enough to
help you get a plate made.

Downloading newsgroup lists and \"initial\" article headers is typically a
lengthy operation. Note that Tbird offers to LIMIT the number of
initial article headers (to 500) for this reason.

For the most part, it\'s a one-time pain -- incremental changes are
pretty quickly dispensed.

I was hoping for a finished article that looked as if it had been made
as a single piece -- much like the cover for the existing siren.

I only need 6 of these. But, need to SHOW that production quantities
can be easily produced and my idea of what those would look like.

This is beyond \"proof of concept\" prototyping (where you can spread
a system across a benchtop fabbed out of perfboard). I\'ve already
committed many tens of $K to prototypes for injection molded parts
(that I need in greater than \"6\" quantities), board layouts, specialty
products, etc. I\'m just trying to avoid yet another design process
(i.e., for a cover plate) by cobbling together bits of plastic and
judiciously hiding evidence of that with a thin layer of paint! :>

Such things are a matter of personal choice and I respect that.
For me, paying a nominal sum for a service that avoids most of
the annoying glitches of a free service is well worth it. I paid
2 Euros for a non-expiring 10GB block with Tweaknews. That was
2.5 years ago and I\'ve used up only 0.1GB, that is, 1% of the
10GB. It\'s fast and I haven\'t encountered any down time. There
are other services that offer comparable VFM.

eternal September server was down for a day or so
AIOE has worked for as long as I can remember, been on Usenet sine 1998 or so.
As to how to read it, remembeer you can access Usenet even with telnet:
https://www.itprotoday.com/windows-78/how-can-i-use-telnet-access-news-server

Read RFC977, I used that in 1998 to write my Linux newsreader as there was no Free Agent for Linux,
still using it today, never a problem (see headers).

# telnet news.aioe.org 119

So the world changes, google and browser writers do their things.. RFC977 remains
