Need help on Toshiba 50A60 Thanks

My Toshiba 50A60 is dead due to a power surge from my local power
company. The power light and sound comes on but no picture. The
place where I bought it from sent out a repairman who diagnosed it as
a power supply problem, and gave an estimate of $500 to fix it. Since
the set is probably not worth a whole lot more than that, and I was
leery of the repairman's diagnosis, it is still unrepaired. Does this
sound like a plausible diagnosis, and is the estimate reasonable? If
anyone is local to the Phoenix area, I would welcome an alternate
repairman.

That sounds a little high to me, given that the problem was caused by a power
surge (not Lightning).
 
Try calling the Toshiba authorized service centre. Most likely the complete
supply can be changed or serviced for about 1/2 of that! I have a feeling
he is over charging by a lot, or doesn't know how to fix it, and wanted just
the cost of the estimate.

I can see that there are NO REAL TECHNICIANS in this group.
Repairing a TV is not a simple job, complete modules, such as power
supply assy's are usually not replaced unless the TV is under
full/parts warranty. Replacing complete assy's can be very costly and
is not common practice unless there is physical damage. The estimate
seems slightly in the high side, but then again power surges can be
very complex repairs. ALWAYS be sure to request a tech from an
AUTHORIZED repair facility.

Depends on the manufacturer. Those old Zenith modules were cheaper to
replace all at once because of the number of things that could (and DID)
go wrong with them. Also, I'd rather be able to swap one of those stupid
Mitsu PIP modules than replace every damn cap on the board.

Motorola made the public long for module replacement with the Quasar
nonsense.
