P.S. since the pack specifies 14.4v and 4400mah, and Lithium ion batts
normally come in 3.6v cells, id say it has a pair of 4-cell strings in
parallel to acheive those ratings.

for some support circuitry, I want to reverse engineer my battery, maybe
make it use different battery technology, li-ion r good as long as u
don't care about using them past 3 years.

Its only a battery pack, its just a bunch of cells. The problem is that
lithium cells have huge power density and long life in comparison with
other types - 3 years is a good span for any battery pack in constant use!
Draw out the circuit yourself since you have the top off. I suspect it will
only be:
2x ---[cell,cell,cell,cell]--- in parallel, maybe with a few take-offs at
part way along for lower-voltage supply.

I dont think this will be so simple.Draw out the circuit yourself since you have the top off. I suspect it will

I have taken appart some of similar packs, but there is often quite
lot of electronics inside. One of the packs I have taken appart was
from a video camera and it definitely employed a microcontroller based
circuity.
I remamber that I wanted buy such cells alone few years ago, in order
to build some power supply for a national mountain day radio event. I
could not find any suppliers who were willing to sell me those cells
unless I would deposit complete engineering drawings of the charging
circuit for the resulting pack.
Ballancer is what they call the circuit in general, it is needed
otherwise there is a danger of overheating and explosion.

the camcorder had a built-in charger circuit to reduce the cost of the
charger adapter?
Li-Ion batts need current limiting (both on charging and discharging) for
safe working, but if you buy like-for-like, i.e. not putting li-ions where
nimh were, and getting similar capacity cells, I'd bite my own arse if you
had problems.
Mail order Li-Ion cells in normal cell sizes:
