NEC ?microcontroller? identification help

I have a display/keypad board from a Brother thermal all-in-one
machine, circa 1995/6 with a chip that I'd love to have identified.

The chip is marked as follows:

NEC Japan
UG3006
9542EX007
PNL

....and is in a 44-QFP package, running off 5V.

I'm guessing that it's a microcrocontroller because it's directly
connected to an LCD that appears to be 44780 compatible (it's chip on
glass, so I can't tell for sure) as well as a keypad matrix, some LEDs
and 3 I/O? lines that connect it to the printer's main board.

Any hints as to the nature of this beast would be greatly appreciated.
An exhaustive Google search last night proved fruitless.

Dunno, but most standard NEC microcontroller names start with "uPD",
where u represents the greek letter mu.

I have seen several chips with this type of number 'structure', from NEC.
Many were custom. However HKinventory, do list a UG3006, made by NEC, and
used by about half a dozen people, in the right package.

Best Wishes
