music on tv is too loud

I have noticed on my 10 year-old RCA 19" tv that the background music
is too loud when compared to the voice. this occurs on regular
programs mostly, but occasionally on commercials too.

My mother has a 1-year old flat-screen Toshiba that does exactly the
same thing! The music is so loud that it drowns out the speech, and
you can't understand what they are saying,.

I have a 12 year-old Mitsubishi 31" that doesn't do this, it's great.

All of these units are stereo, I've tried playing with all the
available controls; tone, balance, etc. etc., can't get rid of this
problem on either of the sets.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Is there a way to correct it?

thanks

Check to see if you have the enhanced stereo, or wide mode turned on. I
don't know the menu location in your particular set for this, but it is in
the audio set-up area of the set. If this enhanced mode is turned on, then
turn it off. Some sets refer this to the surround mode. Having the surround
simulation turned on with most TV sets, your description will take place.

I have been quite pissed by the same issue but thought it was poor sound
engineering at the source? It seems especially annoying with surround sound.
Have you been to the movie theaters lately? They blow you out of your chair
with the sound effects while straining your ears for the conversation. I
wondered if this was a common problem or a age related observation?

feedback please, not too loud.......

I've got a Sharp set where the surround mode is almost eerie. A few times
I've gotten up to see what I heard in the next room, only to realize that it
was something produced by the TV right in front of me.

This is an effect of the surround encoding, and reproduction. For surround
sound, they have to play with the phasing to have the background,
foreground, and wide effect. When the phases are in phase the amplitude will
sum, and when out of phase, the amplitude will be of a subtractive amount as
far as amplitude is concerned. The differential between the sound tracks
will sound strong, especially that sounds in program material are very
random in nature. There will be a complex scenario of summing and
subtracting. To add to this mess, they also use a lot of compression and
expansion processing to put more emphasis on the sound enforcement.

TV commercials are known for very high expansion of the low level sounds.
This makes them sound even louder, even though the peak levels are not out
of specs. If you were to have a UV meter monitoring the output of the TV
set before its internal audio stages, you would see that the maximum levels
can be all within specs, and yet to your ears it can sound like the levels
are all over the place.
