Pretty efficient if it can beat the power to weight ratio on a racing bike.

A 40 watt magnetic rim motor would be enough in competitive races. They must be looking at all kinds of low power technologies and effects where, say, a paint job doubles as a battery with shifter cables insulated as wires. Maybe a "malfunction" shortly into the race converts an otherwise ordinary looking component into a coil. Just before the finish what looks like the rear brake falls off and disappears into a storm sewer.

Not just the bike but the clothing needs to be checked.

People make really tiny, really good motors. 1" is pretty big in some
worlds.

Seems to me that a decent magnetometer could spot a PM motor easily,
even inside a steel tube.

People make really tiny, really good motors. 1" is pretty big in some
worlds.

RC helicopter tail rotors have motors 3 mm in diameter. I was stunned that they could get them down that small for a few $/copy.

Seems to me that a decent magnetometer could spot a PM motor easily,
even inside a steel tube.

Some AC motors would require _coil_ detection which may be impossible.

This is a bigger problem than what race officials understand. It may be on par or even worse than drug detection.
