motion detector as switch

I'm building a project where I need a battery operated motion detector to
turn on a battery powered motor whenever motion is detected. I'm using a
9-volt battery - and have very little experience in building such a circuit.
Could anyone recommend a parts place or walk me through what I need to make
this work? Thanks!

This depends on what sort of motion you want to detect and how you want to
detect it. I often purchase small passive IR sensors from surplus stores, and
once found the circuit boards (working ones, not scrap) at 3 for a dollar.
Give us a few more details if you can.

Cheers!

The motion sensor circuit will probably use as much current as a 9V
battery can supply.

It just needs to detect the presence of a human from about 2-3 feet away -
I'm not familiar with how IR sensors work - but once a human is detected,
the object is activated, perhaps triggering a capacitor to discharge.

Some of the PIR detectors run on their own lithium battery, and last
for seven to ten years before the battery dies.

Last I checked you could get surplus motion detectors from Electronics
Goldmine, all you'd need to do is add an LED.

Trigger a capacitor discharge? What do you need that for? If you're trying
to build a boobytrap just remember that if someone breaks in and gets hurt,
*you* are the one likely to end up in jail, however silly it may be.

How would you want to turn off? Would you want it to run until motion
was not detected or after 60 secs or what?
