That\'s as far as they know now, hence the alarm about its wild mutation rate. It\'s another one spread by respiratory secretions which means really bad prospects for keeping it contained. In the UK they are vaccinating people with the smallpox vaccine which has been shown to be 85% effective against monkeypox.

Infecting a bunch of hosts with various degrees of resistance was how Pasteur made more-/ and less- virulent strains. It\'s the host population that\'s causing the virulence. Infected people are putting up varied forms of resistance and the virus mutation to defeat that resistance is being naturally selected to dominate. Then the racial biology in the west is different from Africa.

Infecting a bunch of hosts with various degrees of resistance was how Pasteur made more-/ and less- virulent strains. It\'s the host population that\'s causing the virulence. Infected people are putting up varied forms of resistance and the virus mutation to defeat that resistance is being naturally selected to dominate. Then the racial biology in the west is different from Africa.
Or maybe we\'re just sequencing more now.

I\'m pretty sure they have archived blood samples from the 1960s or even earlier with which they can sequence the virus DNA.

Right. It didn\'t. Evolution of a pathogen under pressure from the
immune system has long been known. Cancers also evolve under
immune-system pressure. This is a common cause of relapses.
