Monitor sparking at back socket

My monitor is sparking at the back (inside the box, I can see it
sparking through the holes) near the socket where the lead plugs in
when I turn it on. What happens is like a spike. The monitor starts
coming on and then it sparks and then tries to come on again and
sparks again and so forth but of course I just turned it off. I
noticed a few weeks back that the spike was happening on the odd
occassion whent the monitor was on. There would be a loud cracking
noise and then the screen would disappear into a thin line and then
reappear again. Does anyone know what this might be?

You're likely seeing arcing at the spark gaps, there to protect the
CRT in the event of a power supply problem resulting in excessive
voltage. It alos may be in reverse - a short in the CRT allowing excessive
voltage to appear on its pins. In any case, it's a problem that should
have been addressed when you first saw it.
