Monitor going south

How goes it all?
Well, my dear beloved monitor appears to be going south on me.
It's a black 21" IBM branded P202 with a Sony Trinitron tube.
I tore it down to blow it out (ya never know, and Texas is made out
of dust....) but there was little enough dust in the case so I despair
of that doing much good.
Symptoms are black notches in the sides of the screen most of them
replicated on both sides of the screen. Lines across the screen about
every 3/4" delineating light and slightly shaded horizonal bands and
occasional horizontal "smears" of a line of text.
On occasion the entire screen will jiggle/shimmer creating ghost images
and making the screen almost entirely unreadable.
Just popped the case today but most likely the innards are beyond my
meager troubleshooting abilities. Can anyone point me in the right
direction?
I love this monitor which fits in the hutch of my black corner desk with about
1/8" of clearance all the way around.

thanks for any guidance out there...

You will be lucky TBH - people on here tend to be a bit iffy when it comes
to diagnosing common things like this - with the comment "take it to a
repair guy" being the most common. I can see their point, most of them are
repair guys who have to earn a living. I have a problem with my monitor too
but I dont dare ask :D

Have you tried a different videocard or monitor?

I have a videocard that does this same thing regardless of what monitor is
connected.

Hi,
I guess this is a bit obvious, but... have you checked the VGA
connector? If it's loose and one or two pins don't connect perfectly,
weird stuff can happen (I've seen flickery horizontal lines as well
as the whole screen changing colour). Make sure the pins aren't bent
and mate with the socket on the video card nicely. This probably
isn't it, but hey, it's cheap to check :)

Nope, hooked up my 7 year old's antique monitor to it.
It only runs like 640x480 in VGA mode so everything looks like
it's filmed thru an infrared camera but at least it lets me read text.

Also hooked it up to my older son's Compaq monitor and the vid
card runs it fine. Ordered another 21" monitor that's a bit more
recent. There's a place about 20 miles from here that supposedly
repairs monitors. When I get time and want to drive over, I may
drop it off to see what they can figure out about it.

Believe I've seen loose connections do strange things too.
I've swapped monitors around a bit with it but don't know that
I've specifically swapped cables. I had the old cable off and
back on with the same results but I'll see if a different cable
does anything for it.

thanks,
Kurt
