Modify DVD player

Is it possible to make a DVD player that is unable to read/load DVD-R just
by replacing the DVD-Rom that can read newer disc format?

Thanks for the link, but my player is not there. Anyone here know the
equivalent player for Tongtel?

Also, I'm not after region free or macro free etc... only modifying it to
play DVD-R disc

I believe these functions are contained within the flash EEPROM on the
decoder PCB, not the DVD loader assembly.
