Mitsubishi TV center blackout

I have a Mitsubishi model CS-27305 27" TV, made in 1997, with an recent odd
problem: I get a large black square in the middle of the screen after 5 to
10 seconds of turning it on. Also, after pressing any button on the remote,
the screen comes back full for about 5 to 10 seconds, after which the black
box appears. In other words, the center of the screen is essentially
"blacked out" after an initial full screen picture of only 5 to 10 seconds
following a mode change.

Any clues? Is this worth repairing?

thanks,
MJH

Simple; turn off the text mode in the closed captioning in the USER menu
system using the remote control that came with the tv set.
