Mitsi HS-U71 SVHS vcr problem

(This seems to be my week for VCR problems....)

I just came home from an auction with a Mitsubishi HS-U71 SVHS VCR. It works
great with regular VHS tapes, but will not record or play back SVHS tapes.
Audio OK but garbage video. I know the VCR is properly recognizing the SVHS
tape because the SVHS light comes on. Heads look OK to me. Any advice
appreciated.

Most likely the heads, or the playback switching system. You need to go
to another SVHS and try to play what you've recorded on the defective machine
to be sure. When SVHS heads get worn they start producing black flecks in the
bright whites, but if left to go on, eventually they wind up pretty much
scrambling the video.

Even at this stage it is quite possible for it to work acceptably on a nomal
VHS tape. It's just worn, it can do 4 Mhz, but not the 7 Mhz required for SVHS.

You must do some footwork before replacing the head, from the manufacturer it's
likely to be costly. Asti might cut you a deal, but they are not perfect. I've
had good luck with them, but some others I've heard haven't. The only problem I
ever had with them was with it taking 4 months to get a flyback, the heads
always arrived quickly and worked fine.

If the heads are worn and it is recording in SVHS, a machine with good heads
should play the tape back alot better, then record a bit on the other machine
and play it back on yours. Trying to go both ways through bad heads is too
much, but one way you should be able to see something. Any other indication
probably means there is an electronic fault. Also try this in both SP and EP,
because they use different heads. If the problem is simple wear, EP should be
much worse. In either case SVHS requires a very small head gap.

Thanks for the advice, but what's "SMD"? I'm not a pro, just a hobbyist.

Also: Check for bad SMD capacitors. There might be one on a
postage-size board. If it's leaky it wil give a very disorted SVHS
playback.

All the SMD's in my '91 Mitz SVHS were leaky...

No I didn't...I assume that's a cap I'm looking at. Where is that board
located?

Yes. That are the (in)famous SMD caps.

Where is that board
located?
On the main board. However, this picture is from a Mitsubishi HS-U82.
I just wanted to show how these caps looked like.

Thanks - I'll check that out.

I put in new heads, and now I can record in SVHS at either speed, but the
VCR won't play back it's recordings. Good sound but weak torn-up video.

However the picture is perfect if played on a different machine. Also tapes
from different machine look fine on this one. Weird. Sort of a
compatibility problem in reverse!

Lordy, I love this newsgroup! Another tip that led right to the problem. I
replaced that 4.7mf/35v cap and repaired a damaged trace, and now it's
working perfectly. Thanks a lot Steven!

Thx for letting me know!
Enjoy your Mitsubishi, it's a very fine machine...
But you probably knew that already ;-)
