Misbehaving CD hardware

Hello All,

I've got a portable MP3 CD player (specifically, a SonicBlue Rio Volt SP90),
which is behaving strangely. The main microcontroller seems alright, as
evidenced by the normal boot-up animation, but when it tries to detect the
CD, the spindle motor, lens shuttle, and lens focus all move erratically,
in a "random walk" fashion. Eventually, of course, it gives up and reports
"No Disc". I've checked that all of the cables are intact and correctly
seated, and I don't see/smell any obviously fried components, but beyond
that I'm at a loss. Can anyone offer any advice as to what I may be
missing, before I decide that it's trash? The device is a friend's, so I
don't know the circumstances of the failure, but I do know that it used to
work fine.

Thanks,

The CD is not being properly read by the laser, or there is a failure that
is not allowing it to read. You can clean the laser lens yourself, and check
for any broken connections, unseated connectors, ribbons, and ect. Beyond
that, the unit would have to be serviced by someone who can trace out the
operation, and troubleshoot it.

There may also be something mechanically broken. It is very common that
these portable machines are dropped, thus making brakes in the circuit
board, or doing mechanical damage.

Since the unit is a portable one, it may not pay to pay the cost to service
it. Many of these portables are not supported after warranty.
