Is the record-protect switch on the discs engaged?

Also, for MiniDisc to record, the laser must heat up the area to be recorded to
its Curie point and an electromagnet on the other side of the disc actually
does the recording.

If the laser cannot engage in the power mode needed for recording, the disc
will not record. If the electromagnet on the other side cannot deliver the
magnetic pulses that it's supposed to, it can't record.

Please give us more info, like what the player is actually doing when you try
to record. Also, try other discs and, as well, check to see, like I've said
before, if the record-protect tabs on the discs themselves are set. - Reinhart

Without specific model I can't help. Some MDs require at least something to
be plugged into the line in or mic jacks for record to be enabled.

It could be broken, or maybe you're doing something wrong.

Without a LOT more details, who can tell?
