mineral oil

hi, im gonna make a high voltage generator, with 2 auto ignition coils
producing 120kv with an input of about 5000 watts. A documented
problem with theis setup is that the oil inside the coils starts
boiling quite quickly. SO I was thibnking,

a. How do they produce hi voltage generators for sustainable use?

b. WOuld immersing the coils in mineral oil help?

c. WHere can I get mineral oil (without drilling a hole in the local
pole transformer) and how much would it cost

d. COuld I use kerosene or canola oil?

Thanks

hmm, but surely one thousand dollar speaker cables would be conductive
when melted.........

LOve it :)

what a strange project? sounds like you could kill someone with it.

Putting 5kW into a couple of ignition coils sounds optimistic. a 5kVA
pole transformer (22kV/250V) is too heavy for one person to lift.
Usually for any quantity of power at that voltage you would need a
transformer and going from mains to 120kV would be quite expensive im
guessing. Plenty of second had pole transformers around, but they wont
give you 120kV.

At least one type of oil they use in transformers is called "diala b"
from Shell. It looks almost clear when new and is slightly thicker in
texture than diesel. Maybe ring your local power company and see if
they will sell you a few litres?

hope this helps some

Yeah, i was pretty shocked, at the assertion that you can put 5000
watts into those things but
http://www.powerlabs.org/igncoildrivers.htm
says otherwise.

I would assume (without checking the link) that it is only going to be 5kW
peak. No doubt the average power will be a lot less. How bout some huge
fugging heatsink?
Problem is where to attach it

Perhaps you could even water cool the thing somehow.
Or oil cool it :)

What voltage are you going to apply to the primary?

Some oils will pick up atmospheric moisture so be sure to keep
it in a sealed container. An old trick to prove this was to get
some freshly heated oil (over 100 degC) and after cooling place
it in a large surface area dish and weigh it, then weigh it again
after a few days. The weight difference was due to absorbed moisture
which can cause breakdown.

Heheh, you would be at 120 kV :)

Make a clamp out of a solid chunk of copper and bolt if to a fan forced
heatsink

Yes, but you were having some difficulty obtaining oil weren't you? So get a
ton of really small copper tubing and wrap the whole ignition coil up in it.
Run the the copper piping into some kind of radiator and cool with Fan plus
heatsink.

Think outside the square..

You can buy mineral oil at almost every supermarket or chemist!!!
Just take look at the "Baby Oil" label

But as the man might have said, mineral oils ain't mineral oils.
Would *you* guarantee baby oil to 120kV?

Never know til you try :)

it is important to keep water out of it and not to expose it to humid
air. When I worked in the oil lab for a little while, they had this
cool machine in tehre to test the dielectric strngth of oil, highest I
saw it go was 60kV (max on the machine). I think the gap was 2 or 3
mm. It wasn't baby oil tho :)

Someone looking for high voltage oil? There's a servo in Lilydale, Vic
that seels drums of transformer oil. I used to buy it for my 450W Photon
Sources laser head.
